David Nicholson ‘Reserve 100 proof’ (50%, OB, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, +/-2021)
A better rye content material on this sourced whiskey, after the very good-not-great ‘1843’ that we tried just a few weeks in the past (WF 80). Color: deep gold. Nostril: a make that I believe we have already tried a number of instances beneath varied guises, however I am completely unsure about that. Oranges, vanilla, butterscotch, contact of coconut, a bit violet and lavender, a pack of finger biscuits, a bit sawdust… With water: some paraffin and plasticine, ryebread, a bit cardboard. Mouth (neat): somewhat spicy, a bit soapy, with a bit cologne, triple-sec, curious notes of gin, vanilla, toasts, contemporary oak, violet sweets, white pepper… With water: an excellent greater feeling of gin aged in new oak. Orange drops and cinnamon within the background. End: medium, breadier, at all times with a bit gin, particularly within the aftertaste. Oak. Feedback: not significantly satisfied, nevertheless it’s good. Say lowered service and a bit too oak-forward for us.

Heaven Hill 12 yo 2009/2021 (53.5%, Liquid Treasures, eSpirits, Winter Version, bourbon, barrel, 131 bottles)
Color: gentle gold. Nostril: varnish, kirschwasser, sawdust, oranges, lower apples… It does not speak a lot this far, however water ought to wake it up. With water: not the primary time that I am discovering one in every of these Heaven Hills somewhat malty and doughy. Very good notes of pancake, with the compulsory maple syrup (or pancake sauce). Touches of contemporary teak (new backyard furnishings). Mouth (neat): marmalade, nutmeg and cinnamon, these violets (sweets, crystallised petals…), contact of grapefruits… What’s actually wonderful with these indie bottlings is that they’d somewhat show much less straight oak. Some liquorice. With water: some preserved fruits popping out, wholegrain bread, tiny touches of rye. End: medium, with ripe apples maybe. These violets within the aftertaste. Feedback: maybe rather less spectacular than an earlier HH by Liquid Treasures (2009/2019, WF 88) however nonetheless actually good, for my part. Cautious with the quantity of water you add, having stated that, it is most likely not the perfect swimmer ever.

Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 24 yo 1994/2022 (47.9%, C. Dully Choice for MustHaveMalts, 350 bottles)
If that is nicely Heaven Hill – the bottlers would not disclose the title of the Distillery – it was distilled earlier than that huge hearth that occurred in 1996. 350 skittles from a 24 yo barrel is a pleasant outturn. Color: gentle amber. Nostril: fudge, shortbread, butterscotch, raisins and dried figs, a contact of espresso, even a touch of lighter rum (Cuban model), shrub, in addition to some corn syrup. Bourbon on your breakfast, clearly. Mouth: you do really feel the oak, however that might somewhat be oak as in some outdated Scotch whisky than a varnishy oakiness as will be skilled in bourbons. Very good oranges, triple-sec, a bit ginger and ginseng, gingerbread, cinnamon cake… End: medium, cakey, contemporary. Madeleines. Feedback: it began a bit drying however the oak was quickly to mix in and it by no means stopped bettering. By no means rush outdated People… (Hey Joe)…

Van Winkle 12 yo ‘Household Reserve’ (45.2%, OB, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, +/-2000)
From Pappy Van Winkle’s non-public inventory, I consider that is nonetheless from Stitzel-Weller. There are various tales, some a bit arduous to observe from right here, however there, it’s stated that this might be ‘the stuff’. Color: gentle amber. Nostril: in fact. Preserved peaches and apricots, ganaches and home made vanilla fudge, butterscotch, caramels, heather honey, a cup of rooibos tea with a drop of milk, a drop of hen bouillon, a drop of miso, a drop of goulash sauce… That is the type of complexity that I’ve not discovered fairly often in bourbons – now in fact, for those who point out Outdated Fitzgerald… Mouth: holy Suzy! This talks, begins with straightforward tales (some chitchat round fudges and toffees), goes on with cigars, chocolate and occasional, and would then bombard you with salty and honeyed sauces and coverings, a few of Asian heritage. You’d virtually consider this was distilled in pot stills (*). End: lengthy, excellent, complicated, with these touches of rye (rye bread, spicy violets, lavender sweets) and only a feeling of some very, very dry and somewhat meaty outdated oloroso. I do know, how weird. Blood oranges within the aftertaste, orange sweets, Szechuan peppers… Feedback: not shocked, however extraordinarily impressed. Excellent bottle getting old too.

(*) Simply realised that they could have been pot stills certainly. |
