Craigellachie 2007/2019 (46%, Scyfion Selection, Saint Daniel wine cask end, 201 bottles)
Our associates in Ukraine and their humorous wine finishings! On this very case, crimson Saint Daniel, some Ukrainian wine that may mix ‘Cabernet Sauvignon, Saperavi and Bastardo Magarachsky’ varietals. We continue to learn quite a bit about wine, because of our Ukrainian associates! Now vorsicht, that is crimson wine… Color: straw (not rose-y hues!) Nostril: actually all proper, within the model of Glenlivet 12 I’d say, or of Macallan 12 ‘sherry’. No redberry invasion, slightly a pleasant malty improvement, some oranges, ales, maybe a contact of strawberry jam within the background? In any case, no wine in opposition to whisky battle in our glass, they appear to get alongside properly. I’ve to discover a bottle of crimson Saint Daniel, actually inquisitive about that Bastardo Magarachsky (why are we not stunned, S.) Mouth: cakey, with some fruitcake, mushy spices, marmalade, goji berries and dried jujubes (what they name crimson dates in some locations). I am simply having a pack from China at residence, actually love them. End: slightly lengthy, candied and but recent, with, I swear to Alfred Barnard’s reincarnation, quite a lot of dried crimson dates. Feedback: cool, good, and really educative. Now, onto Bastardo Magarachsky, it is open season so the hunt begins…

Craigellachie 13 yo 2007/2021 (48%, Dumangin & Fils, ratafia champenois end, batch 015)
We have already tried a few of their finishings, one Bushmills (very good!) and one Greenore (not too unhealthy!) This time they’re tackling Scotch malt whisky, so a thicker, fatter base. Let’s examine… By the way in which, at WF we’re die-hard followers of all of the wee uncommon specialties they’re having in Champagne and within the north of Burgundy, ratafia certainly, Irancy, Rosé des Riceys, sauvignon de Saint-Bris, some Coteaux-Champenois… Nice wee classes to discover. Anyway, let’s transfer on… Color: gold. Nostril: yep. Keep in mind ratafia is not any wine, it is slightly should plus eau-de-vie, which implies that there can’t be any ‘fermentary clashes’. Jaffa truffles, orange cake, large moist figs, sultanas, dried apricots, peach jam… and tangerine liqueur! Tangerine liqueur would finish any wars, simply ship some to the fighters on each side. Very good nostril, with Jaffa truffles on the helm. Mouth: completely pretty. Dried fruits, dried citrus, sultanas, dried rambutans (actually), rooibos tea (not fairly tea however there)… What comes slightly sudden is that this would not even be stuffy or thick or cloying. In brief, steadiness and freshness have been preserved. End: medium, slightly extra on yellow plums and quinces. Feedback: I do not assume this ending modified a lot to the unique spirit, it simply made it louder and a notch thicker and hotter, in a great way. Like what a very good tube amp would do to an outdated 45rpm by The Stones, if you’ll. Nice job, I suppose we should have just a few ratafias right here at some point. Oh and I’d additionally do that on Hampden and name that ‘Rastafia’. Simply sayin’, not my enterprise…

Craigellachie 12 yo 2009/2021 (52.5%, The Maltman, amarone end, cask #8, 294 bottles)
Amarone, the stuffiest crimson wines in da world. Now some are fairly good, let’s be sincere, however to mix them with malt whisky, in my fairly slim views, is like letting Ozzy Osbourne sing Mozart. Color: gold. Nostril: it was properly mastered, as soon as once more that is no cherry extravaganza, no raspberry slaughter and no strawberry Stalingrad. In brief, this stays malt whisky, within the model of some average sherry ending. With water: recent panettone, different doughs and orange-blossom-driven pastries… Simply what we like – we agree that is slightly unavowable. Mouth (neat): but-this-is-good! Speculoos liqueur, I am positive our Belgian associates are making that. Orange bitters, marmalade… Very excellent! With water: much more good, as they might say in Paris. Some salty orange cordial. End: slightly lengthy, getting extra complicated, slightly on every kind of chutneys slightly than jams. Feedback: I am lifeless positive this could go extraordinarily properly with champagne, in some sort of Bellini or Scottish Kir Royal. 1/20 this, 19/20 champagne. As excessive as any such winey concoction may go in my little tasting e book.

Craigellachie 15 yo 2005/2020 (56.5%, Gordon & MacPhail, Connoisseurs Selection, for HNWS Taiwan, refill bourbon barrel, cask #16600309, 255 bottles)
Come on, it is time our associates in Elgin known as this legendary collection ‘Bloggers Selection’, no? We agree, on second thought, no… Color: straw. Nostril: appears like holidays after the wineskies. Mild cereals, barley syrup, recent sawdust, grated coconut, custard, paraffin, sunflower oil, sesame, polenta… With water: similar. Emphasis on ‘sawdust’. Mouth (neat): whisky al pure positive is superior, even when there’s slightly an excessive amount of recent oak. Desserts and breads and woods and branches. To be sincere the oak’s slightly loud, even when it was real refill certainly, which I am positive it was. As we stated earlier than, casks transfer in mysterious methods. With water: straightforward candy barley-y brew, plus a few of these barely stuffy oak-aged IPAs. Nobody has limits nowadays. End: lengthy, oak getting even larger. Feedback: refill certainly? Looks like scratched and toasted, however not recharred. However what do I do know… Excellent, however I am not an immense fan.
