Slightly bag of younger barrelled Glen Moray

I imagine the indies actually did loads for Glen Moray lately. The Distillery had some nice small batches as properly, however these used to fly underneath our radars. Having mentioned that it was fascinating to attempt variants of the experiments that they used to do at Glenmorangie underneath one other flag, akin to some with virgin oak, varied sorts of American oak and so forth. I bear in mind an excellent Mountain Oak, for instance, however anyway, we’ll somewhat have indies at present…

Glen Moray

Glen Moray 12 yo 2007/2020 (46%, The Whisky Lodge, Orcines, bourbon barrel, cask #5450)

Glen Moray 12 yo 2007/2020 (46%, The Whisky Lodge, Orcines, bourbon barrel, cask #5450) Four stars

An impeccable, very coherent vary of pure, drinkable malts. At all times advisable. Color: straw. Nostril: stresses the mineral, extra austere facet of this malt, in addition to white fruits, artisan bone-dry cider, graphite oil, crushed chalk, then some type of camphorated porridge. Very good, intriguing, however a bit of scary… Will not the palate be a bit of tough?… Pure rethoric, I am positive it will not. Mouth: we’re fining the identical type of profile but once more, and certainly its austere, peely and chalky, however a couple of bonbons and marshmallows have made it simply approachable. Banana foam, pear drops, a bit of vanilla sugar… As standard, the 46% work very properly, it is an ideal energy. End: medium, with baggage of apple peel, inexperienced pears, ans a contact of thyme within the aftertaste. Or thyme honey. Feedback: as anticipated, impeccably close-to-the-malted-barley.

Glen Moray 13 yo 2007/2021 (52.5%, Maltbarn, bourbon cask, 160 bottles)

Glen Moray 13 yo 2007/2021 (52.5%, Maltbarn, bourbon cask, 160 bottles) Four stars

Maltbarn, one other impeccable, very dependable little whisky home. Color: straw. Nostril: this one’s fairly chalky too, I am even discovering tiny whiffs of washing powder. Very related profile as that of the Orcines, each whiskies being nearly equivalent. Inexperienced pears, apples, porridge, mineral oils… With water: would turn into grassier. Grape pips oil, white calvados, chalk… Mouth (neat): this time once more the palate’s a bit of sweeter and fruitier, though this one could be firmer and maybe a bit of extra on citrus, grapefruits, citrusy hops… Excellent. With water: there, marshmallows and lemon and pear drops! End: superb certainly, somewhat lengthy, a bit of hoppy. Apple peel within the aftertaste. Feedback: a refined variation on the exact same theme.

Glen Moray 13 yo 200/2020 (50%, Thompson Brothers, 2 first fill barrels, 532 bottles)

Glen Moray 13 yo 200/2020 (50%, Thompson Brothers, 2 first fill barrels, 532 bottles) Four stars

Color: straw. Nostril: related once more, naturally, besides that this one could be fruitier, extra extravagant, with much more Haribo-y issues, extra Jell-O, wine gums and, certainly, some very citrusy hops. I can’t not consider Lagunitas. With water: chalk and wool. Funnily, the fruits went again into their shells, so to talk. Mouth (neat): a bit of chalky certainly, then as soon as once more on baggage of sweets and jelly candies of all types. Candyfloss, fruit liqueurs, syrups. The feel is fairly syrupy certainly. Icing sugar. With water: as soon as once more, extra citrus, extra IPA, extra hops, grapefruits… End: fairly lengthy, chalky and fruity. Inexperienced melons, cantaloupes, citrus. Feedback: nearly as good as these batches get, you simply have to love them fruity. However who does not?

Maybe a 2008 for a change?

Glen Moray 12 yo 2008/2021 (56.4%, C. Dully Selection, barrel, cask #5664, 185 bottles)

Glen Moray 12 yo 2008/2021 (56.4%, C. Dully Choice, barrel, cask #5664, 185 bottles) Four stars

Color: white wine. Nostril: it’s completely different, somewhat grassier, extra on skins, zests, peel, paraffin, lamp oil, inexperienced bananas… A espresso spoon of mashed turnip, maybe, a bit of acidic yoghurt, contemporary buns, whey… With water: will get a lot rounder. Vanilla cream, vanilla yoghurt, brioche, contemporary panettone and barley sugar/sweet cane. Mouth (neat): it is a tighter Glen Moray, and but there’s extra fruit paste, jelly… Angelica, greengage jam, a contact of fudge, custard… I’d suppose the cask was extra energetic right here. Slightly liquorice as properly. With water: certainly, sweet cane. Excellent, if a tad regressive. We’re all getting older, are we not? End: medium, with a bit of caramel, fudge, nougat and sesame + peanut bars. Excessive proteins. Feedback: I wasn’t completely positive however certainly, it grew on me. Very beautiful tipple, displaying superior evolutions as soon as you’ve got added drops of correct Swiss glacier water. I am joking now.

A good youthful one because the final drop…

Glen Moray 8 yo 2012/2021 (60.3%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, #35.286, first fill bourbon barrel, 'Xanthous Symphony', 235 bottles)

Glen Moray 8 yo 2012/2021 (60.3%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, #35.286, first fill bourbon barrel, ‘Xanthous Symphony’, 235 bottles) Three stars and a half

Image of a earlier bottling. Xanthous? Does that imply that this one’s even paler than your common 8 yo ex-barrel malt? Color: pale white wine. Nostril: uncooked kirschwasser straight from the condenser. Sugar. Pear juice. I’d imagine water is obligatory, in any case they have not known as this firm the ‘Scorch Malt Whisky Society’, have they. With water: some grist, crushed barley, semolina, brioche dough… Mouth (neat): mirabelle eau-de-vie and sugarcane syrup. With water: it’s totally younger however give it a bit of time and it will turn into rewarding. This toddler will then shoot quince jelly, pear paste, curaçao, and certainly extra sugarcane syrup. Or cane honey, as they generally say. End: medium, somewhat on bubblegum. Feedback: I used to be scared however It seems this youthful Glen Moray was having some fairly convincing arguments. Good, let’s attempt to discover extra about the true meanings of the phrase ‘xanthous’ on this context. Would any natives be prepared to assist?
