Tasting rising Tullibardine

Tullibardine
We have been desirous to strive a number of Tullibardines for months. Individuals are inclined to say there’s a lot enchancment across the make…
‘From a dependable supply (that means spring) since ice age.’ French journal advert, 1995. ->

Tullibardine 15 yo (43%, OB, +/-2020)

Tullibardine 15 yo (43%, OB, +/-2020) Four stars

We have by no means tried this 15. Plainly it has been integrally aged in recent barrels and that no pointless wine woods have been used. We could not wait… Color: darkish straw. Nostril: begins somewhat fermentary, which may be very Tullibardine so far as I can keep in mind, with notes of high-class ales, certainly some ripe bananas, some brioche dough, some overripe apples and pears…It might then go in direction of rounder, cakier aromas, praline, glazed chestnuts, millionaire shortbread, kougelhopf… However that is pretty! All of the uncertainties of Tullibardine of outdated appear to have disappeared, whereas it could have remained a characterful malt. I consider I am reasonably impressed to this point. Mouth: oh pleasure! That is wonderful, beginning with some nice teas (pu-her, greatest assams) and marmalade, and occurring with many pastry doughs. That simply at all times works. Coming to the floor then, many oranges, blood oranges, tangerines, additionally quince jelly, well-ripened kakis… End: medium, with some black pepper which wasn’t unseen in earlier expressions. Some myrtle liqueur. Feedback: spectacular. I ought to have tried this one earlier and for that I really feel disgrace. Hope they will do a 46 or 50 model of the exact same make.

SGP:651 – 87 factors.

Extra first fill bourbon, please…

Tullibardine 8 yo 2012 (60.6%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, #28.60, first fill barrel, 'Juggling flavour balls', 237 bottles)

Paint thinner or correct, drinkable malt whisky? Color: white wine. Nostril: custard and butterscotch – the wooden was energetic! Some sunflower oil too, Golden Grahams, pear cake… With water: extra earth, gray pepper, roots, beers, sourdough, then brussels sprouts, baked eggplants… This appears to be extra ‘Tullibardine’ than the official 15. Mouth (neat): very oily and, it appears, excellent. Oranges, mint and honey, that is a profitable combo. No eggplants. But it surely’s sizzling… With water: no, excellent, orangey, earthy, even zesty and tight. I am discovering reasonably quite a lot of verbena, genepy, fennel… Additionally one thing a tad resinous and grassy, perhaps black propolis. That is wonderful on your throat and propolis is even an excellent virucide. Simply saying, in case… End: lengthy, reasonably resinous. Outdated forgotten natural liqueur. Oranges are again within the aftertaste. Feedback: class, only a tad easier than the OB. In reality, the OB’s at present rising on me…

SGP:461 – 86 factors.

Tullibardine 9 yo 2011/2020 (64.5%, Hot Malt, Taiwan, sherry finish, cask #18/9133, 312 bottles)

Tullibardine 9 yo 2011/2020 (64.5%, Scorching Malt, Taiwan, sherry end, cask #18/9133, 312 bottles) Four stars

The little chicken with the humorous beak on the label tells me this may very well be good too…  Color: deep gold. Nostril: extra sherry this time, clearly, with extra walnut wine, backyard earth, marmalade… whereas keep in mind, virtually 65% vol. Let’s not burn our nostrils. With actually quite a lot of water: steel polish, engine, eggplants, soot and paraffin. Mouth (neat): a malty cake and a few younger rancio. And 64.5% vol., thoughts you. With water: we tamed the utter beast! Some bitter fruits, some riesling, gooseberries, somewhat mustard that will remind us of a lot older bottlings of Tullibardine… The factor is, as soon as you’ve got added sufficient water to deliver a spirit down by 20% vol., so from 65 to 45 on this very case, I consider you need to watch for round… three months earlier than all molecules have recovered. Yeah proper. End: lengthy and reasonably on desserts, some somewhat burnt. Which works. Feedback: a superb  caky Tullibardine that wants somewhat work. Do they fill at over 63.5% vol. or did the power simply rise?

SGP:551 – 86 factors.

We’re actually happy with these little Tullies, are we not… However we have additionally bought older ones…

Tullibardine 28 yo 1993/2021 (47.6%, Thompson Bros., UK exclusive, 347 bottles)

Tullibardine 28 yo 1993/2021 (47.6%, Thompson Bros., UK unique, 347 bottles) Four stars

Why an UK unique? We’ll name Downing St. proper tomorrow morning, there might be hell to pay! Color: straw. Nostril: there, old-school Tullibardine, with extra suet, carbon, rubber boots, mushy peas, cream cheese, button mushrooms, yoghurt, sawdust, brake pad, pepper… Nicely these noses are nice, however keep in mind the satan lives and prospers on our palates… Mouth: it is actually a matter of opinions. Outdated Tullibardines, and outdated Glenturrets for that matter, have at all times been the whackiest, I might even say the loco-est (must you say that in English) Scottish malt whiskies round. You are proper, Fettercairn used to come back shut. Out of date scraps, plastics, carbon mud, pencil lead, leatherette, bitter apples, whey, lavender, yoghurt, grass juice, lime zests, bison vodka… effectively you see what I imply. End: lengthy, inexperienced, resinous, grassy and petroly. Feedback: how do you rating a whisky? If it is a matter of being devoted to a regional or native model, as in wine, this may be 100%. So, 100 factors. If it is a matter of intrinsic pleasure, that will reasonably be like 70 factors. Good, 100+70=170; 170/2=85.

SGP:472 – 85 factors.

Good, you’ve got been warned…

Tullibardine 30 yo 1989/2019 (47.1%, Hunter Laing, Old & Rare, Platinum Selection, 295 bottles)

Tullibardine 30 yo 1989/2019 (47.1%, Hunter Laing, Outdated & Uncommon, Platinum Choice, 295 bottles) Four stars

Color: gold. Nostril: somewhat comparable but gentler, probably due to some extra energetic oak. However certainly we’re discovering extra carbon mud, grand-prix pit (tyres, petrol, engine oil, aftershave), ashes, charcoal, leatherette, new electronics, pretend sneakers straight from Alibaba or Want (welcome BPA a.okay.a. bisphenol A and phthalates), coal tar, new plywood, IKEA outlet… Yeah I do know, IKEA kills it, apologies. Mouth: oh, redemption? This isn’t unseen in malt whisky, citrus coming to the rescue. A great deal of bitter oranges, tart lemons and limes, concentrated lemon juice, loopy unripe chenin blanc and sauvignon blanc, verjuice… You can depend your vertebras as this one goes down your anatomy, which comes useful. However, inside this ueber-tart model, this one could be the emperor. End: lengthy, extraordinarily acidic and grassy. Feedback: completely spectacular, and completely loco. Showcase malt whisky, for enjoyable. Scores are meaningless in this type of scenario.

SGP:471 – 85 factors.

Phew!… It may very well be excellent news that we have not at present bought any outdated OB within the bins. CU, Keep secure and tuned….
