Montebello 12 yo 1999 (40%, OB, Guadeloupe, cask #186, +/-2012)
A terrific thought, very badly executed. I imply, for instance, 40% vol., what a let-down; now we do like Montebello, that is for positive, let’s simply hope this would possibly not be a really irritating path… Color: gold. Nostril: what a distillate, for crying out loud! Extraordinary notes of benzine, boat’s spent engine oil, olives each inexperienced and black, anchovy paste, cane juice, liquorice… Superb nostril, among the best within the Caribbean. However the reality lies on the palate, does it not… Mouth: what an impressive olive-y, inexperienced, extraordinarily liquoricy distillate! What a pity and a disgrace that they might have gone for these awful 40% vol. which can be synonymous with homicide, damnation, putrefaction and laziness. Fairly. End: shortish and but, the distillate is totally great. Gorgeous liquorice. Feedback: their factor after all, however some do get away with homicide. Seppuku in your glass, actually.

Mirascielo (38%, OB, +/-2020)
Oh sugar, that is spiced rum of unknown origins, made-up like a truck stollen in Belarus and possibly flavoured like all ‘stuff’ from Starbucks’. Now since we’re right here, let’s do it… (you could skip to the following one, having stated that)… Color: gold. Nostril: not a lot. Sweetened hay, maybe? Aside from that, nuffin’ from nuffin’. Mouth: caramel sauce. Some form of under-Don Papa, understanding that Don Papa’s actually very low already. End: none. Film-theatre’s popcorn. Feedback: a bullshit model, very weak and nasty drink, fairly a scandal, let’s name Scotland Yard.

Manutea 3 yo 2017/2021 ‘VO’ (58.7%, OB, Tahiti, cask #BY21, 300 bottles)
From French Polynesia, sadly completed in wine (Banyuls), however certainly you by no means know, Manutea’s repute being fairly excessive… Color: amber. Nostril: good agricole-y notes, plus some estery touches, olives, metallic polish, dill and aniseed, liquorice, butterscotch… With water: good, you’ll virtually consider you are in Barbados (FS), with added menthol. What we name ‘Zan’. Mouth (neat): good, close-to-the-cane, natural and mentholy, with some crystalised lemons and extra aniseed, menthol and liquorice. With water: some no-quibble fats and estery rum, fairly liquorice-driven and albeit, a shock. First time I am listening to of Manutea. End: lengthy, on much more liquorice, with a salty tang. Feedback: superb shock, though it might not go in for subtleties in my view. Tahiti, you say?

Penny Blue 2009-2011/2021 (59%, Navigator World Whisky, Mauritius)
Stuff from Medine Distillery. It’s a little sophisticated as there are two vintages and clearly two cask numbers and probably different variations. If I keep in mind effectively, Berry Bros. have been concerned right here however that is very previous knowledge and lots of beers have handed. Color: amber. Nostril: floral, fragrant, simple, cane-y, with just a little fudge and, yeah, flowers. Ylang-ylang, zucchini… Perhaps just a little skinny having stated that however I’ve all the time discovered my Mauritian rums just a little ‘skinny’ certainly. With water: in the direction of woods, sawdusts, cigars, coffees… Mouth (neat): earthy liquorice, oranges, mint and caraway, then crude chocolate and occasional beans. Easy and simple, just a little drying maybe. With water: identical, no modifications in anyway. Maybe extra liquoricy molasses. End: medium, with some thinness and but some very nice orangey liquorice. Feedback: not earthshattering however no quibbling both this time once more. Bored? In fact not!

Hampden (replace, really Monymusk) 23 yo 1997/2021 ‘JMM’ (48.1%, Thompson Bros., Jamaica)23 yo 1997/2021 ‘JMM’ (48.1%, Thompson Bros., Jamaica)
In fact we have not proof that this could be Hampden, please blame literary license. Color: gold. Nostril: after all. Crushed anchovies, liquorice, previous pine-y armagnac, roasted sesame and pistachio, very previous Sauternes that went dry, sauna oils, and simply whatnot. Roasted pine nuts. Would are likely to grow to be extra coastal over time, with additionally surprising whiffs of vine peaches. Mouth: bingo. Superb rotten fruits, brine, combava, lemons and picket oils. What it might lack is a few extra-acidity, nervousness and verticality, no saying it might be wishy-washy after all, however you get the concept. After 23 years I’d suppose it might are likely to grow to be a tad extra urbane, maybe. End: lengthy, salty. Feedback: nonetheless a killer nevertheless it’s attention-grabbing to see, and even contact the bounds. In any case, Hampden just isn’t Lagavulin (Nobel Prize in your quickly, S.) .
