Summer season Duets
As we speak Balvenie
We had Glenfiddich the opposite day and we’re slightly logical individuals. So, it is Balvenie’s flip…

Balvenie 12 yo 'DoubleWood' (40%, OB, +/-2021)

Balvenie 12 yo ‘DoubleWood’ (40%, OB, +/-2021) Three stars
I am going to say it, I had thought an earlier expression, in all probability bottled only one or two years earlier than this one, had been disappointingly weak (WF 76), whereas the primary batches of the DoubleWood had slightly been cruising alongside the 82/83 line… Color: gold. Nostril: some spicy pear cake, mead and cider, kriek beer, a wee glass of mirabelle eau-de-vie, then slightly English breakfast tea and barely bitter previous wine barrels. All that is not disagreeable thoughts you, quite the opposite. Was ‘final 12 months’ simply an accident?… Mouth: phew, I am actually completely happy to report that regardless of some gritty greenish and tea-ish notes right here and there, it is again, with some black raisins, pear cake certainly, cherry tea, bitter cherries, a number of drops of brandy… Positive, these awful 40% will not elevate it to any sorts of heights, however I am discovering it simply wonderful and properly made. End: somewhat quick, on extra English breakfast tea. Oh, and marmalade, naturally. Feedback: I am actually glad it is again. Keep in mind it was one of many earliest ‘completed’ malts.
SGP:451 – 82 factors.

Let’s discover an indie Balvenie…

Burnside 25 yo 1994/2019 (51.1%, The Whisky Cask Company, bourbon hogshead, cask #5114, 246 bottles)

Burnside 25 yo 1994/2019 (51.1%, The Whisky Cask Firm, bourbon hogshead, cask #5114, 246 bottles) Four stars
Formally a blended malt, because it had been ‘teaspooned’ previous to bottling. Did you discover all these teaspoons they’ve on the entrances of their warehouses, subsequent to the valinches, copper canines, bung extractors and different nifty instruments? And even on the filling stations? Me neither. Color: mild gold. Nostril: bursts with overripe golden scrumptious, ripe apricots, plums, vanilla, stewed greengages, then slightly white pepper and cinnamon. It is extremely Balvenie for certain, I am reminded of the official 15 Single Casks (you realize those that would truly be 20 years previous whereas nonetheless being labelled as 15s). With water: very good. Some lighter acacia honey, vanilla, recent sawdust, a contact of umami sauce, inexperienced tobacco, lime leaf tea… Mouth (neat): superb if a tad tough across the edges, slightly near a fruit bomb ala previous Benriach or Bushmills, with a rising tropical aspect that is not that frequent in Balvenie. Mangos, bananas, ardour fruits. Additionally one thing bitter (chlorophyl, liquorice wooden) that is not disagreeable. With water: as soon as once more extra grassiness, fruit peelings, teas… Nevertheless it’s all remaining tight and focussed. End: slightly lengthy, on related aromas, between fruits and teas. A drop of Starbucks’ Vanilla Espresso, a nasty factor, actually. Higher strive that combo from this little Burnside. Feedback: maybe not completely a high-precision Balvenie, however I discover it very superb.
