Little Duos, right now bitter-sherried Oban
There’s an Oban inside this yr’s Particular Releases, which I discover pleasing. We may name this wee session a worm tub-special. Did you ever see Oban’s?

Oban 2007/2021 ‘Distiller’s Version’ (43%, OB, Montilla fino end, batch #OD 170.FC)
I’ve by no means fairly realised that in Montilla-Moriles, they do make fino out of PX grapes. A sudden flash, you already know. I’ve at all times quite loved Oban’s ‘DE’. Color: deep gold. Nostril: the fino’s much more apparent than earlier than, however we do exactly love fino whereas Oban can be the proper make to get married to those wines. Not too positive who had this concept again then, Dr Jim? Dr Maureen? See, I am not at all times complaining about finishings… tobacco, mustard, walnuts, chalk, putty, roasted sesame, outdated magazines, petrol, marmalade… Mouth: mustard up, with some salt, chutneys, contact of cardboard, capers, inexperienced walnuts, drop of seawater… There’s one thing clearly west-coast, even when that will be, partially, the west coast of Spain. End: quite lengthy, a lot drier, on pepper and tobacco. Ashes and somewhat cardboard, mustard sauce ultimately (sauce à la diable). Feedback: as I mentioned, I am keen on this salty and smoky mixture. This may be big at approx. 50% vol.

Oban 10 yo ‘The HIdden Paradise of Black Rock’ (57.1%, OB, Particular Releases 2022)
This one was completed in amontillado this time. There may be some form of purple rabbit on the label, perhaps is that this the return of the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog. Undecided I am absolutely getting the ‘story’ that is coming with this yr’s SRs… Color: white wine. Nostril: there’s this fruitier, err, fruitiness that is quite reminding us of the older OBs, those that used to return in ‘diamond’ bottles. Nice stuff. Whiffs of soppy varnish, sherries, cranberries, melons, the smoky coastalness being toned down right here. With water: Oban’s smoky mustard and walnuts popping out. Some fig jam too, from the sherry? New tweed jacket. Mouth (neat): highly effective, sizzling, on marzipan and kirschwasser, then wine gums and marshmallows, all that on a creamy texture. With water: some grassier bitterness, walnut pores and skin, peppers, allspice… End: lengthy, somewhat rugous and difficult. Nearer to the DE now, however I am discovering that DE somewhat superior. Feedback: glorious younger Oban, however with an identical combo, I assumed the Distiller’s Version had quite extra to inform, and that it was somewhat extra advanced. Bah, each nice drops, whereas Oban stays uncommon, so far as numbers of various expressions go.
