Speyside Scotch whisky distillery Benriach proclaims the rearrival of The Sixteen to its portfolio, reintroducing the ‘lacking piece’ to its flavor-forward line-up of Single Malt Scotch whiskies. Benriach The Sixteen was initially retired from the portfolio in 2016, and the enduring expression now returns with a reformulated recipe. The expression bridges the hole between the 12 and 21-year-old malts within the core lineup. To craft Benriach The Sixteen, Benriach spirit is three cask matured for no less than 16 years in bourbon barrels, sherry and virgin oak casks.
“The return of Benriach The Sixteen is a really particular second for the distillery as it’s one in all our most treasured expressions,” stated Rachel Barrie, Grasp Blender for Benriach. “Our signature Speyside type blossoms at 10 years outdated, discovering depth and richer layers of orchard fruit character because it turns 16. Our core taste parts of fruit, malt, and oak grow to be extra concentrated, enriched with age at 16 years outdated, bringing layers of stone fruit, easy creamy malt, wild honey, and nutty oak spice.”
Benriach The Sixteen is bottled at 43% ABV and is obtainable for an SRP of $115.
GSN’s Remarks: Brilliant and cheerful sherry/malt nostril with a touch of smoke and saline. The entry is gorgeous with the sherry notes carrying the spirit into a better dimension. Virgin oak tones this down considerably with a dry, tannic component, however this actually solely comes by way of on the end. On the mid-tasting there are notes of honey butter, roasted pecan and candy rolls. A fairly delicate and but self assured whisky that has loads of character. GSN Ranking: A
