A trio of Kilkerran

Hoi Sin
After these terrific Springbanks we tried proper yesterday, I assumed we might have one other go at sister Distillery Glengyle and their make ‘Kilkerran’.

Thanks Madame Li on the Baguettes d’Or in Strasbourg >

Kilkerran 8 yo 'Cask Strength Port Cask Matured' (57.9%, OB, 2022)

Kilkerran 8 yo ‘Cask Energy Port Cask Matured’ (57.9%, OB, 2022) Four stars

In my e-book, Port is rarely an apparent alternative, with pink berries of every kind which will conflict with any potent distillate. However as at all times, there are lots of exceptions and we’ll preserve an open thoughts, even when the color is pink as, nicely, pink as flamingos. Color: excellent news, it isn’t pink as flamingos, it is simply apricoty. Nostril: not apparent certainly, the mixture producing enormous notes of cedarwood (new humidor, pencil shavings) and peppered blood oranges, then morello cherries, strawberry-flavoured yoghurt, Fruit Loops, peonies… Kilkerran’s character is just not completely offset, having stated (the lead within the pencil shavings!) With water: some sort of yeasty brioche with goji berries and cranberries, plus reasonably plenty of liquorice (allsorts). Mouth (neat): reasonably scorching, on bitter pink fruits, pushed by cherries, additionally pencil shavings as soon as extra, Szechuan pepper and correct pepper, then the soiled smokiness that we get pleasure from a lot. All that doesn’t actually conflict, having stated that, plainly the cask (a pipe?) was fairly clear. With water: water works extraordinarily nicely. Do not strawberries and pepper actually get on collectively? End: lengthy and clear, with extra fruits, ashes, peat and pepper. Straight Port and raisins within the aftertaste. Once more, no clashes. Feedback: excellent, little question in any respect, it is simply that I largely favor bourbon and sherry, which at all times really feel much less ‘flavoured’ to me.

Kilkerran 8 yo ‘Cask Energy Sherry Cask Matured’ (58.1%, OB, 2022) Four stars and a half

There’s been a wonderful ex-re-charred oloroso again in 2019. Color: gold with copper hues. Nostril: this one’s clearly smokier in look, however it’s bought simply as a lot pencil shaving. However, it is displaying this glorious meatiness that may be encountered in lots of sherried Springbanks, in direction of dried beef, bresaola, Grisons meat, or beef jerky (with a little bit chilli). Additionally rather more earth, extra dirtiness, extra chocolate, mole sauce, mocha, nocino, hoisin sauce, barbecue sauce (Tennessee-style)… With water: reasonably extra of all that, particularly extra earth, in addition to geraniums. Mouth (neat): we’re nearer to the Port, with some pink berries as soon as extra (the place do these come from?) and plenty of pepper (as soon as once more, each Szechuan and ‘correct’). In any other case a great deal of pipe tobacco, cherry liqueur (Heering), raspberry ganache… The peat is clearly louder than within the Port. With water: each fatter and drier, which is ideal. Asian sauces of every kind – I might exist off nothing however that for the remainder of my life. Thai, Chinese language, Indonesian, Indian… Nicely, all of them. End: reasonably lengthy, this time with some citrus chiming in, peppered marmalade, black cherry jam (I feel I’ve already written strains about these from the wee village of Itxassou, within the French pays basque.) Basic earthy and lemony smokiness within the aftertaste. Feedback:

SGP:564 – 88 factors.

And talking of bourbon…

Kilkerran 11 yo 2009/2021 (56.5%, Cadenhead, Authentic Collection, bourbon barrel, 204 bottles)

Kilkerran 11 yo 2009/2021 (56.5%, Cadenhead, Genuine Assortment, bourbon barrel, 204 bottles) Five stars

One ought to at all times watch what’s cooking at W.M. Cadenhead’s… Color: white wine. Nostril: some a lot tighter, cleaner, less complicated wooden and a distillate that may categorical itself freely this time. As a consequence, this can be a reasonably less complicated whisky, however this stays my most well-liked model and this time once more, we’re reminded that Campbeltown is near Islay. Mud, chalk, wool, iodine, hessian, peat smoke, seashells… Not a lot tar, having stated that. I discover this totally impeccable. With water: emphasis on hessian and wool. And new Harris tweed. Mouth (neat): winner. Lemon, peat, chalk, sourdough, plasticine, salt, ashes… One other little blade. In the future we’ll do a correct Kilkerran vs. Longrow session. With water: the lemons within the lead this time, plus a drop of fish oil and seashells. Randomly… clams. End: not everlasting however with extra wax, lemon and smoked fish. Saltier aftertaste. Feedback: a beautiful little peater with an ideal fatter physique and rocking lemons and seashells. Less complicated pleasures, that’s what all of us want in these troubled instances. One or two extra-points simply due to that.

SGP:455 – 90 factors.
