Bunch of Glenrothes

Glenrothes
There’s lots, let’s have just a few.

Glenrothes 11 yo (43%, Gordon & MacPhail, Discovery, +/-2020) Three stars and a half

Sherry. Color: gold. Nostril: barley and brioche, cake, fudge and softly malted beer. A bit corn syrup. That is extraordinarily all proper. Mouth: very malty, cakey, with numerous butterscotch, treacle toffee, pudding and roasted walnuts, then cocoa and tobacco. The 43% vol. are working nicely. End: medium, extra on chocolate but, with at all times this putting maltiness. Honey cake, muscovado, contact of apricot jam and dried dates. Deep-roasted nuts within the aftertaste. Feedback: a really malty drop to have in your bar and to pour all buddies who would nonetheless be questioning about ‘what maltiness is’.

SGP:551 – 84 factors.

Glenrothes 12 yo 2009/2021 (54.7%, Thompson Bros. for Melody Whisky Bar, sherry octave) Three stars and a half

No image I am afraid nevertheless it’s most likely pretty. The Melody Bar is positioned in London. Color: full gold. Nostril: large and tight, with some leafy sherry and a few soapy stems. In any other case varnish, desserts and desserts. I might swear water is required. With water: beer, ales, cider and walnut wine. Mouth (neat): punchy and butterscotchy. With water: there, we tamed it. Water is completely obligatory or the oak would simply lead the pack to the cliff. Loosened-up, suppler, rounder, with extra praline, roasted pecans and tobacco. End: lengthy, bitterish when unreduced, simpler when at some civilised power. Feedback: superb, you simply must work to get it proper, as virtually at all times with small-cask operations. I feel.

SGP:461 – 83 factors.

Secret Speyside 30 yo 1990/2021 (48.5%, WhiskySponge, 2 refill hogsheads, 519 bottles)

Secret Speyside 30 yo 1990/2021 (48.5%, WhiskySponge, 2 refill hogsheads, 519 bottles) Four stars

When even Glenrothes will get secret, you perceive that there is one thing rotten within the State of Whisky (why be so grandiloquent, S.?) Color: straw. Nostril: it is pure barley with leaves and stems, plus limestone and beer in addition to dandelions, wisteria and light-weight honey. Mouth: nicer on the palate, with tighter citrusy notes, bitter herbs and notes of hoppy beer. Apple juice. End: medium, malty. Apple crumble and somewhat bitter caramel. Feedback: this one doesn’t look its age. Actual good if a bit ‘within the center’.

SGP:451 – 86 factors.

Let’s double-check that age factor, with one other 30…

Glenrothes 30 yo 'Oldest Reserve' (43%, OB, 2012)

Glenrothes 30 yo ‘Oldest Reserve’ (43%, OB, 2012) Four stars and a half

This one was stated to be ‘a mixing of whiskies from 1967, 1972, 1977, 1979 and 1980′. Feels like The Stones’ discography, no? An earlier official 30, bottled in 2004 at 50.2%, had been very-good-but-not-great in my guide (WF 86). Color: deepest gold. Nostril: we’re understanding why this bottling used to come back with an excellent popularity. Begins with beehive-y notes, particularly luggage of pollens of all colors, goes on with artisan cider, finally ends up with many natural teas and honeys. No, the listing can be approach too lengthy. Say maple honey and chamomile. Mouth: I used to be about to say ‘Macallany’. Faint smoke, wooden, dried fruits (dates, bananas, figs) and a few dried meats, jerky, bresaola… A floral facet as nicely, and naturally many honeys. Honey is the blood of Earth. End: medium and splendidly floral. Honey, mango jam… Feedback: great, just a few extra % would have shot it over the 90-mark.

SGP:651 – 89 factors.

Glenrothes 23 yo 1997/2021 (53.2%, Whisky AGE, Hong Kong, hogshead, cask # 715753, 262 bottles)

Glenrothes 23 yo 1997/2021 (53.2%, Whisky AGE, Hong Kong, hogshead, cask # 715753, 262 bottles) Four stars

Fairly bizarrely, many ‘somewhat common and large-volume’ Speysiders have been superb in 1997. Color: darkish straw. Nostril: this one would remind us of these all-natural Glen Grants from related vintages, with loads of chalk, lemon, leaven and sourdough, solely then fruitier tones, round tangerines and golden scrumptious. With water: sameish. Much more chalk and fairly some grist. Mouth (neat): pretty liquorice wooden and star anise at first, that comes sudden. Then bitters, Aperol spritz (I do know), oranges and as soon as extra this chalkiness. With water: again on recent bread, chalk and citrus peel. End: relatively lengthy, with a stunning bitterness, apple peel, extra chalk but and lemon. Some rounder barley syrup within the aftertaste. Feedback: comparatively easy, flawless pleasures. I preferred this one very a lot certainly.

SGP:551 – 87 factors.

Let’s attempt a youthful 1997, simply to ensure it is a matter of classic…

Glenrothes 17 yo 1997/2015 (54.5%, Chapter 7, bourbon hogshead, cask #15721)

Glenrothes 17 yo 1997/2015 (54.5%, Chapter 7, bourbon hogshead, cask #15721) Four stars

Color: gentle gold. Nostril: this was to be anticipated, that is virtually the identical whisky, only a tad chalkier and gristier but, extra on uncooked barley, with virtually no fruits in any respect. With water: inexperienced apples, cider apples… Bites your nostril a wee bit however that is not an disagreeable feeling in any respect. Mouth (neat): similar. Chalky citrus and somewhat beeswax. With water: waxes a tad up. End: relatively lengthy, tight, chalky and tart. Feedback: zesty and refreshing. Glorious drop, as soon as extra – expensive outdated hogsheads!

SGP:551 – 86 factors.

One other attempt at that classic…

Glenrothes 22 yo 1997/2019 (57.6%, Sansibar Clans, Whisky Maniac, sherry cask, 238 bottles)

Glenrothes 22 yo 1997/2019 (57.6%, Sansibar Clans, Whisky Maniac, sherry cask, 238 bottles) Four stars

Color: white wine. Nostril: similar because the Chapter 7, roughly. Relatively greater than much less. Mouth: similar, maybe a notch rounder, ,with hints of raisins, maybe. End: similar. Feedback: all proper, this one was simply glorious too. And they’d swim like Olympic athletes – or Russian sailors. One other nice pure drop, with very reasonable sherry affect.

SGP:561 – 86 factors.

We have nonetheless bought terrifying quantities of Glenrothes Cadenhead but to style. Corresponding to this different 1997…

Glenrothes-Glenlivet 21 yo 1997/2019 (57.1%, Cadenhead, Sherry Cask, sherry butt, 510 bottles)

Glenrothes-Glenlivet 21 yo 1997/2019 (57.1%, Cadenhead, Sherry Cask, sherry butt, 510 bottles) Four stars

This one was totally matured in sherry, it is not only a fast, awful, miserable ending as seen elsewhere. Color: gold. Nostril: an official indie. I imply, it is an indie that is bought all of the attributes of the perfect officers, particularly roasted nuts and malty beers. Pretty! With water: two or three struck matches, some espresso and a few chocolate, the tiniest contact of tarmac… Mouth (neat): excellently sherried, with some marmalade, touches of ginger and turmeric, many nougats, millionaire shortbread and Mars bars, chocolate, chestnut cream… You would actually imagine that is an official 20-something. With water: chocolaty marmalade, Jaffa cake… Nice drop. End: lengthy, with just a few typical ‘whisky spices’, cloves, cinnamon, juniper, pepper… And numerous chocolate. Marmalade within the aftertaste. Feedback: no innovation right here, that is ultra-classic. Innovation in whisky? You go first…

SGP:551 – 87 factors.

Glenrothes 26 yo 1990/2017 (52.4%, Signatory Vintage, hogshead, cask #19019, 255 bottles)

Glenrothes 26 yo 1990/2017 (52.4%, Signatory Classic, hogshead, cask #19019, 255 bottles) Four stars and a half

Color: white wine. Nostril: this one’s a lot waxier once more, extra honeyed as nicely, with extra pollen and honeys. Golden Grahams, pancake sauce and nougat. I can not see who would not like this, maybe perverts? With water: it is bought Meursaulty. Additionally some weissbeer and simply recent panettone. Panettone, again on WF! Mouth (neat): deep syrups! Peach, apricot, pineapple, greengages, tangerines… With water: extra preserved fruits, syrups and fruit salads. This one’s extraordinarily straightforward, extraordinarily good. Fruit Loops. End: medium, recent, very fruity. Jams and syrups. Feedback: on the better facet. Nearly as good as they get.

SGP:641 – 88 factors.

I might wish to attempt a younger one now, to search out extra knack and fights…

Glenrothes 11 yo 2009/2021 (53.5%, Maltbarn, sherry cask, 165 bottles)

Glenrothes 11 yo 2009/2021 (53.5%, Maltbarn, sherry cask, 165 bottles) Four stars

Maltbarn’s labels are at all times very stunning, with at all times some un-plundered, totally unique paintings. Color: gentle gold. Nostril: trendy, lively wooden. Vanilla and butterscotch, white nougat and popcorn, maple syrup, milk jam and Ovaltine/Ovomaltine. With water: similar, plus real Alsatian kougelhopf. Mouth (neat): glorious. Tighter, but with tons of butterscotch and rice pudding. With water: oranges coming out. Triple-sec, correct curaçao, plus madeleines and cassata… Nothing is to not be preferred right here. End: medium, cakey. Superior fudges and Walker’s cookies. Feedback: uncomplex, interesting (we’d have written ‘horny’ within the outdated Jim days), glorious. It is arduous to make them higher at simply 11, I’d suppose.

SGP:651 – 87 factors.

Glenrothes-Glenlivet 24 yo 1994/2019 (47%, Cadenhead, Sherry Cask, sherry hogshead)

Glenrothes-Glenlivet 24 yo 1994/2019 (47%, Cadenhead, Sherry Cask, sherry hogshead) Four stars

This one’s a ending, it solely spent from 2015 to 2019 in sherry wooden. It’s cask power, no reductions have taken place. Color: full gold. Nostril: 4 years in sherry is already rather a lot and that feels. All is ok right here, Ovaltine is again, praline, macchiato, a drop of soy sauce, Hoisin sauce, cocoa, somewhat pipe tobacco, cigars… In brief, all is nicely. Mouth: superb for positive however maybe a tad extra disjointed, with notes of orange squash and a grittier gingerness. Pretty chocolate, although. End: fairly lengthy, saltier, meatier. Peking duck after which Maggi and Guinness within the aftertaste. Feedback: one other one which I loved loads, it was only a tad extra adventurous (let’s consider).

SGP:362 – 85 factors.

Let’s discover a totally ‘white’ one and we’re carried out.

Glenrothes-Glenlivet 17 yo 2001/2018 (53.2%, Cadenhead, Authentic Collection, bourbon hogshead, 276 bottles)

Glenrothes-Glenlivet 17 yo 2001/2018 (53.2%, Cadenhead, Genuine Assortment, bourbon hogshead, 276 bottles) Three stars and a half

Color: white wine. Nostril: again on lees, sauvignon blanc, lemon and apple peel, chalk, aspirin, grist, porridge… I imply, you see… With water: mercurochrome and loopy artisan cider. Watch your tooth. Mouth (neat): barley eau-de-vie, melon liqueur, Williams pear, inexperienced apples and simply grass… This one’s fairly uncooked and tough. Presumably fourth fill or one thing. With water: candy barley in majesty, plus ripe apples and pears. End: medium, with somewhat sugar past the overripe apples. Feedback: in fact it was somewhat too ‘bare’, maybe somewhat too younger given the apparent laziness of the cask. Nonetheless a really tremendous dram, with good barley sweetness.

SGP:641 – 83 factors.

Glenrothes 21 yo 1997/2019 (46%, Signatory Vintage, Un-chillfiltered Collection, casks #4826 + 4827)

Glenrothes 21 yo 1997/2019 (46%, Signatory Classic, Un-chillfiltered Assortment, casks #4826 + 4827) Three stars and a half

Color: golden straw. Nostril: very gentle, on candy malt, apple juice, brioche and popcorn. Pear cake. Mouth: no literature wanted right here (literature, yeah proper). Candy maltiness, roasted nuts, some bitter cake (battelman, maybe) and croissants. And Danishes. End: medium, on apple cake and somewhat burnt sugar and nuts. Demerara sugar. Maltier, virtually stouty  aftertaste, with some pepper too. Feedback: we knew this may simply superb, like most whiskies on this pretty un-pumped-up assortment from Signatory’s.

SGP:541 – 84 factors.

I’ve simply counted them, that is 13 Glenrothes, that is an excessive amount of already. See you, cheers…
