Dalmunach 6 yo 2015/2021 (50%, Claxton’s Exploration Collection, purple wine barrique)
Proper, a purple wine end, so I doubt we’ll handle to get to the core of Chivas’s Dalmunach at this time. Color: salmon/blush wine. Thighs of a moved nymph, as 18th century painters would have mentioned. Nostril: enjoyable. Burnt strawberry cake, pure rubber, Lambrusco and stewed peaches. Whiffs of peonies. With water: a little bit smoke, hints of bay leaves, Timut pepper, leaven, baker’s yeast…Mouth (neat): but-this-is-good. Strawberry cake, contact of rubber as soon as extra, vine peaches and now wham-bam raspberries and cassis. Phew. With water: fairly good! No deviant berries, somewhat extra malt, kriek, maraschino and only one goji berry. For glory. End: medium, maybe extra on blood oranges, with some terry pepper and a few discreet cloves. Feedback: this has been finished with restraint. Extraordinarily removed from the catastrophe I used to be anticipating, much more so after I had checked the color.

Ardnamurchan 6 yo 2015/2022 (57.1%, WhiskySponge, 48A, refill barrel, 163 bottles)
Color: white wine. Nostril: maybe the very best throughout the new wave of peaters. Very exact, chiselled, with delicate tar (Pirelli – ha) and coal, then olive oil. When olive oil comes by, I’m completely satisfied. With water: burnt butter, olives, cigar ashes, smoked sausage. Mouth (neat): even higher on the palate. A sense of coal-smoked olives, which they might have then let marinate in a mix of Jamaican rum and mezcal. One thing like that. With water: we have to see the papers, the place it says ‘Scotland’. End: lengthy, olive-y, virtually bacterial. Massive smoky ashes within the aftertaste. Feedback: straight from a Scottish muck pit. I used to be able to go to 88, till I seen that it was solely 6. I do what I would like.

Ardnamurchan 6 yo (53%, WhiskySponge, 48B, refill and 1st fill barrel, 163 bottles)
The Sponge could have finished some mixing right here, which collectors all the time… worry. Color: white wine. Nostril: that is a lot gentler than 48A, extra on grist, pancake, banana pores and skin and, certainly, a tarry smokiness which, this time, behaved. Moderately sadly, the olives and the mezcal are gone. With water: a bit within the center. Mouth (neat): peatier on the palate, extra tropical as nicely. Smoked bananas and maracuja cream. I imply, smoked maracuja cream. Then extra saltiness, brine, lemons, oysters and… some Jamaicanness! With water: water virtually places it again into the identical cluster as that of 48A, even when it stays ‘lighter’. End: similar. Feedback: some Talisker-level smoke right here. To be sincere and after cautious pondering, I prefer it the identical as cask #48A. It simply wants a little bit extra of your time.

Ardnamurchan 7 yo 2014/2022 (57.1%, WhiskySponge, 48C, 1st fill bourbon barrel, 163 bottles)
All proper, I believe I can see the plot now. Color: golden straw. Nostril: crushed bananas and croissants, white Bordeaux (Pessac – do you say white claret in English?) plus jelly infants, marshmallows, fermenting pineapples and pancake dough. With water: sameish. Good doughy and fermentary tropicalness. Mouth (neat): candy vanilla, mangos, ardour fruits and bananas. Typical good malt distillate in contemporary American oak, nicely taken care of. With water: extra on candy barley, grenadine, even cranberry. End: lengthy, leafier. Hops and pomegranates. Feedback: I am pondering of ex-BB Bimber, I do not know why. Maybe my Boris aspect.
SGP:641 – 88 factors. |
All proper, I’d suppose the equation was 48A + 48C = 48B. Good one! (I swear to Vishnu that I used to be not within the know). What’s useless certain is that in my guide, all three had been equally superb. However let’s transfer on…

Nc’Nean 2017/2021 ‘AON’ (59.6%, OB for Kirsch Import, sherry hogshead, cask #17-257, 208 bottles)
AON? Wasn’t {that a} somewhat dreadful film with Charlize Theron? The value is insane right here (169€), however you by no means know, platinum is pricey too… Color: purple amber. Nostril: feels American. Westland and stuff. Wooden oils, marmalade, pinewood, gingerbread. With water: gingerbread glazed with marc de gewurz blended with orange blossom water and icing sugar, plus a metallic contact. Copper tones. It’s about wooden. Mouth (neat): good thick spicy gingerbread and ten tons of liquorice allsorts. With water: similar plus an enormous pecan pie and Trappist sauce. I imply, you are taking one litre of Westmalle or a Rochefort and also you let it simmer in a copper pan for about half a day. End: and it goes on. All the world’s manufacturing of Jaffa desserts. Feedback: welcome to the yr 2023. I imply, 2022. I can not not agree that this Tesla of malt whisky is nicely made, however it certain is not a Miura. Make sense of that when you can. Critically, I can not not prefer it so much (why all these double negatives, S.?)

Daftmill 2009/2021 (60.7%, OB for Kirsch Import, 1st fill oloroso butt, cask #024/2009, 627 bottles)
Aren’t these folks at Kirsch’s firing on all (twelve) cylinders as of late? All the time on the leading edge… And did you discover that this was 11 or 12, already? Color: gold. Nostril: luminous banana and mango desserts coated with manuka honey, with a little bit tar liqueur and possibly a drop of spent engine oil. A drop of miso soup as nicely. First fill oloroso or not first fill oloroso, at 11+ Daftmill appears to be going fractal… With water: pinewood, brake pad (after race, as we use to say) and varied tiny fermentary components. Particularly Japanese, Chinese language and Vietnamese sauces. Mouth (neat): my my my my… You have simply met Tyson in some again road and should not have began joking about Holyfield’s proper ear. Large whisky. With water: calms down however stays thick, spicy, candy and salty, and to be sincere, not that removed from the extravagant and barely tiring Nc’Nean. End: everlasting and wonderful, stuffed with oils and peppers. Feedback: soupy and really spectacular however to be sincere, it’s not unimaginable that I would favor gentler and barely leaner ex-HHD or ASB Daftmills. We stay prepared and welcoming…

Annandale 6 yo 2015/2021 (61%, The Whisky Chamber, bourbon barrel, cask #449, 343 bottles)
I consider it is the primary time we’re formally attempting Annandale, from the Lowlands, the place they began ‘burning’ in 2014 though an older Annandale Distillery had been working till the yr 1924. The brand new Distillery is legendary for having put a price ticket of £1,000,000 on their first cask, which, I’ve so as to add, did pull a whole lot of wholesome guffaws. Undecided the Veblen impact works like that. Color: white wine. Nostril: the room is stuffed with pears and grist, while some fruity beers are popping out too, however the energy is excessive and should block it a wee bit, let’s have a look at… With water: fatter, creamier, with somewhat a whole lot of sunflower oil and marzipan, even some suntan lotion, with whiffs of coconut, karite butter and all that, then crystallised citrons and oranges. Very wonderful now that H2O did its job, however water is completely obligatory right here. Quinces popping out after a minute or two, which simply all the time works. Mouth (neat): uncooked and brutal, which is completely regular, thoughts you. Massive rubbery pepper, bay leaves and leather-based. With water: maybe a little bit pepper in extra, in any other case simply finely citrusy and almondy. Would anybody settle for to attempt to make peppered marzipan, not simply marzipan utilizing bitter almonds? End: lengthy, on pepper and lemon foam, with some paraffin within the aftertaste. A tiny contact of iron too, or silver spoon, and even a touch of camphor, in addition to a peatiness. Feedback: very wonderful, if not 1Mio-fine.

Strathearn 4 yo 2014/2018 (57.4%, A Few Barrels Firm, Uniqueness Of The Cask Assortment, New charred American oak octave, cask #081, 57 bottles)
Strathearn, pretty place! I consider the Thompson Bros. have gotten some new Strathearn too, together with one which we even helped making (nicely we had been doing the speaking and joking). Color: gold. Nostril: creamy, with this sense of nosing a complete assortment pack of banana foams, strawberry marshmallows and simply jellybean allsorts. Some vanilla too, naturally. With water: candy sawdust, polenta, houmous, chickpea, maize bread… Mouth (neat): geared in the direction of melon cake or one thing like that. The candy oak is a little bit loud I’ve to say, with a whole lot of coconut, additionally ginger and white pepper. Tough octaves… With water: and there, success, all you wanted was water and a correct pipette. Pink grapefruits, touches of turmeric, maybe ginseng… That is all good and finely spicy, with out getting excessive. End: medium, candy and creamy. Citron liqueur with some pepper and certainly, turmeric. Or gin. Some cocktail! Feedback: some ups and a few down however it clearly ended on the upside. One other one to look at, the entire mission is getting sophisticated, is it not.

Good one, we went straight from complaining in regards to the +/-20 or 25 distilleries that had been shut down within the early Eighties and Nineties to moaning about the truth that there are too many new distilleries in Scotland. Are we ever completely satisfied?

Good, actually a final one…

Isle of Raasay ‘Launch no.2’ (46.4%, OB, batch #R-02, 7500 bottles, 2021)
This child from the 2016 and 2017 vintages. They’ve used fairly some ‘cask invoice’, principally ex-rye whiskey, contemporary Chinkapin oak, and first fill Bordeaux purple wine. Plainly it’s also a self-blend of unpeated and peated Raasay. Color: straw. Nostril: this sense of pinewood-smoked bananas, plus porridge, cream cheese (hey Suzy! Sorry, Zappa followers solely) and craft weissbeer. It is extremely fermentary and I’d say the smoke solely makes that feeling even larger. I can not discover any Médoc, St Emilion or Pomerol, having mentioned that, however I am unsure I’ll lodge a criticism. Mouth: I believe that is nicer than batch 1. A lot fruitier than on the nostril, though nonetheless somewhat singular (pink pepper, cream cheese, pomegranates, pears, soot, cider, turmeric this time once more…) End: medium, on some form of bitter smokiness and somewhat chenin blanc than cabernet, when you ask me. No, final time I checked they weren’t rising any chenin blanc in Bordeaux and with international warming, I doubt they’re going to ever do it. Spanish varietals may be subsequent… (oloroso Pomerol, that may have fashion, no?) However I am babbling… Feedback: up 3 factors in my guide since basic launch #1.
