Not a make that we strive fairly often, the magnificent previous sherried ones are gone. At the moment we have got three latest ones on the desk, all indies, and shall see if the well-known motto ‘laborious to say, straightforward to get pleasure from’ (or one thing like that) stays true.

Auchentoshan 11 yo 2010/2021 (46%, Cadenhead, Authentic Assortment, bourbon)
Color: white wine. Nostril: elementary if not rudimentary, fairly all on banana foam, lemon drops and bubblegum, earlier than somewhat extra grass and inexperienced tea would come out, along with a drop of nail polish, and custard and vanilla cake afterwards. Truly nicer than it sounds, it is value ready for a couple of minutes in order that it could open up. Fairly curiously, I am discovering echoes of that different Lowlander named Daftmill. Mouth: actually rudimentary now, the cake is gone and the grass has seized management. A really surprising salty contact, in any other case some gritty candy and bitter pastries (some mochis spring to my thoughts). Briefly, nonetheless good however certainly, somewhat rustic. End: medium, on closely sweetened inexperienced tea, then lemon zests and kirschwasser. Feedback: I am fairly a fan of the nostril right here. Give it a while…

Auchentoshan 13 yo 2007/2021 (48%, LMDW, Artist Collective 5.0, first fill sherry end, 1571 bottles)
That is what I name having religion. What’s extra, all labels are improbable in these sequence. Color: purple amber. Nostril: certainly, sherry works properly with Auchentoshan as no clashes are to be anticipated within the first place. Auchentoshan is just not Laphroaig (see what comes from ‘running a blog’ about whisky for 20 years!) The standard moist walnut cake, pipe tobacco, compost, Jaffa cake, black Smyrna raisins, fruitcake, cherry liqueur, Pedro (Ximenez)… Mouth: extra further-fortified sherry, actually. Walnuts, raisins and tobacco, oranges and cloves, End: medium, extra on chocolate, liquorice and a few dried leaves. Lime, maybe? Some black tea for positive, in addition to somewhat ginger and chestnut honey. Feedback: the opposite aspect of the coin. Head aspect bourbon, again aspect sherry.

Auchentoshan 21 yo 2000/2021 (58.3%, Signatory Classic, bourbon, cask #800027, 163 bottles)
Color: gentle gold. Nostril: this one’s uncooked, with lots of varnish and even glue at first sniffs, then mercurochrome, contemporary paint and putty… Somewhat kiwi, lime and rhubarb juice within the background, so very inexperienced certainly, however not too positive. Effectively I am positive water will maintain all this… With water: superior contemporary natural complexity! Much more contemporary putty but in addition a beautiful Sancerre-y chalkiness, a drop of benzine, a dab of shoe polish, and an infinite citrusy improvement. Thanks Kronos, god of time. Mouth (neat): ho-ho, wonderful, punchy, extraordinarily Haribo-y however not uninteresting or infantile (see what I imply), with some excellent citrus liqueurs. As soon as once more, water ought to work wonders… With water: precisely what time would carry to malt whisky, specifically complexity. A variety of citrus, bergamots, kumquats, citrons, grapefruits… Then essences and oils, even a tiny pinhead of tar. Glorious, vibrant, luminous and rejoicing. End: medium, on ‘waxed citrons’, ought to that exist. A drop of tequila blanco within the aftertaste. Claro que si, actually. Feedback: an ode to correct ageing (vs. sooner flavouring with oak and wine). Thanks for this one, Signatory Classic.
