I doubt they’d mash Crystal malt at Glenturret, even though their present proprietor additionally owns Lalique, together with the gorgeous restaurant and lodge ‘Villa René Lalique’ within the far north of little Alsace. By the way in which, I’ve heard the brand new Lalique restaurant at Glenturret Distillery was fairly great and I simply can’t wait to go strive their “Cappuccino de Haggis à la Truffe” (proper, I simply made that one up).

Glenturret 12 yo '2021 Release' (46%, OB)

Glenturret 12 yo ‘2021 Launch’ (46%, OB) Four stars

I assumed 2020’s Maiden Launch of the 12 was simply glorious (WF 85). Color: deep gold. Nostril: on the nostril it actually jogs my memory of some ham à la diable (coated with mustard then baked) served with a wee glass of bone-dry Madeira. We’re then getting extra spice woods, particularly juniper wooden, additionally pine and cedar wooden, then some softer, creamier custard and only a wee bag of contemporary walnuts. Maybe additionally bitter beer and uncooked cocoa powder. Very singular, which is what we take pleasure in. Mouth: these spicy woods are first to indicate up (thuja, cedar) whereas it is getting saltier by the second. What we typically name a ‘manzanilla-y growth’. Then moderately amontillado, with one thing extra oxidative, some tobacco… End: very lengthy, this time on Fernet Branca and various dry natural drinks, nutmeg, extra walnuts and extra manzanilla, then a bit of wasabi within the aftertaste. And much more walnuts. Feedback: certainly, superb and intensely spicy, with a sense of being in Jerez at instances.

SGP:372 – 85 factors.

Ruadh Maor 10 yo 2009/2020 (53.8%, Claxton's for Fadandel, Moscatel quarter cask, cask #156A, 178 bottles)

Ruadh Maor 10 yo 2009/2020 (53.8%, Claxton’s for Fadandel, Moscatel quarter cask, cask #156A, 178 bottles) Three stars

As chances are you’ll, or could not know, Ruadh Maor is the title for Glenturret’s peated model. In fact I would not know whether or not this very ‘Moscatel’ was moscatel from Jerez or not. Color: gold. Nostril: truly, I am unsure the moscatel has something to say on this very smoke-forward combo that, at instances, would remind us of Ledaig. Fairly some leather-based, rubber boots, pinewood smoke, new tyres, sea spray, tarry ropes… With water: carbon paper, new books, tyres, rubber bands, dried kelp, a bit of stagnant seawater… Mouth (neat): not 100% certain, the Moscatel feels this time, there’s some candy mustard, extra rubber, some demerara sugar, some salt… With water: will get frankly sweeter, we’re moderately having triple sec combined with pepper and ginger liqueurs. Somewhat tough and, as some distillers used to say fifteen years in the past, ‘experimental’, which typically used to imply ‘with apologies’. End: rathe earthier and moderately mineral too. I can’t not consider some loopy official Ledaigs. Mustard within the aftertaste. Feedback: maybe a bit of difficult?

SGP:475 – 80 factors.

Glenturret 35 yo (47.7%, That Boutique-y Whisky Company, batch 2, 365 bottles, 2016)

Glenturret 35 yo (47.7%, That Boutique-y Whisky Firm, batch 2, 365 bottles, 2016) Four stars

Let’s do not forget that final 12 months’s official ‘Maiden Launch’ 30 years outdated was moderately implausible. Different outdated Glenturrets had been a tad unlikely having mentioned that, we’re speaking about people who had been accessible within the Nineties… Color: deep gold. Nostril: a tiny rubbery contact at first however that may go away in a flash, leaving loads of room for some candied tropical fruits (loopy guavas), a big bag of coconuts, some manzanilla certainly, lime blossom, and simply touches of Parmesan cheese. Certainly it is typically wandering on the sting however no worries, it is a wonderful tightrope walker. Mouth: identical feeling of an outdated malt that is fairly unlikely, fragile and unsure, however that is doing nicely. Cream cheeses, yoghurt, fermenting plums and maybe bananas, chewing rubber bands, plasticine, some saltiness, mead and manzanilla, some grassy rum, then a bit of turmeric… I discover it a bit of odd and superb. End: medium, on extra spices, café latte, some odd brew from Starbucks’ (like cinnamon in espresso), mustard and walnuts, fino… Feedback: as we typically say, there are some very glorious flaws on this one, so I’d say it’s moderately for the curious.

SGP:561 – 87 factors.
