A trio of Hazelburn
|
|
A wee session lengthy overdue! Bear in mind Hazelburn is the lighter, unpeated, absolutely triple-distilled model of Springbank. And naturally, we have already discovered some Hazelburns which have been comparatively smoky, fats and, as they are saying, assertive.

Hazelburn 22 yo 1998/2020 (46%, North Star Spirits, first fill sherry hogshead, 230 bottles)
Labelled as a triple-distilled Springbank simply to lure the enemy. Critically, that is the title of the Distillery. Color: amber bronze. Nostril: whole dry, walnutty sherry, stuffed with, nicely, of walnuts, metallic polish, gunpowder (gun that simply shot), tabasco and Worcester sauce, smoked sausage, outdated crimson from Burgundy, mushrooms, moss, what we used to name ‘civette’ (mature sport animals), mutton, matches, concrete, outdated storage… That is, certainly, very advanced, with a coaly smokiness. An ideal instance of ‘good’ sulphur if you’ll. A bit glutamate-y. Mouth: in line with the nostril, besides that this has additionally received big a great deal of salted liquorice, outdated cognac, certainly a variety of walnuts, truffles, marmalade, tobacco, much more smoked sausage… I would have been curious to do that at full energy, it should have been a monster. End: very lengthy and shock-full of liquorice, then Jägermeister and simply Cynar. Artichoke wine and/or liqueur. Feedback: I do not know if the distillate was lighter, the cask certain wasn’t. Fairly excessive and spectacular, and maybe a tad segmenting as they are saying in advertising and marketing. I am on the great facet of the fence.

Hazelburn 13 yo 2007/2021 (48.6%, OB, Restricted Version, 6,000 bottles)
¾ bourbon and ¼ sherry, I believe we have seen that combo working many occasions already, all over the place. Color: gentle gold. Nostril: very pure, but a tad metallic and natural, with additionally some seashore sand and a few kelp, in addition to quite surprising whiffs of orange blossom. Tends to change into actually floral, with some recent pollen and definitely a wee glass of limoncello. A wee Springbanky fatness too, quite round outdated device, engine oil… Simply drops thoughts you. Beautiful recent and complicated nostril. Mouth: there, the Distillery’s superior soiled facet and it is not even hiding. Extra engine oil, linseed, touches of soot and cigarette ashes, then gentler notes, lemon marmalade, elderberry syrup, just a few mashy notes… I used to be about to say salsify too, and mint, and aniseed, and liquorice. End: medium to lengthy, recent, saltier, a little bit smoky as soon as once more, even frankly coastal in direction of the aftertaste. Oysters, lemons and champagne. Feedback: high-definition make, only a tad much less advanced than the unbelievable North Star. I am a fan of this model.

Hazelburn 15 yo (54.9%, OB, On-line Tasting Week 2021, recent oloroso, 1,174 bottles)
Color: amber. Nostril: a a lot cleaner sherry when in comparison with the North Star, nevertheless it does have these tiny eggy notes certainly, engine oil, soot, suet, coal smoke, then sweeter notes, truffles, raisins, dried figs, black nougat, pipe tobacco, crude chocolate… This one’s actually probably the most Springbanky of them three to date. With water: there, sport sausages, excessive grouse, toffee, outdated crimson Bourgogne this time once more, a little bit leather-based, pipe tobacco… Properly, it certain may be very oloroso-y. Mouth (neat): it is as if somebody would have blended the 2 earlier ones, because it’s received each the NS’s animal dirtiness and the OB’s cleaner, extra coastal vibrancy (for lack of a greater time period). Great marmalade, allspice, chocolate, tobacco, a little bit ginger, mushrooms, a drop of Maggi, lovage, lemons, a little bit brine… All that whereas it is gaining fatness too. Huge child. With water: this time it could quite change into a little bit sweeter, however some form of chalky gingerness is there too, truffle oil (you pour that over any pizza and presto!) roasted chestnuts, earthy tea, roasted black raisins… End: very lengthy, with some rancio wine this time. Even touches of PX that, we agree, should not fairly be there. The aftertaste is extra on salted lemons, quite appropriately. Feedback: a superb so-called sherry monster with a distillate that is having its say too. Reasonably much less meaty/soiled than the NS.

That ‘On-line Tasting’ bottle jogged my memory of HP’s seminal and flabbergasting ‘On-line Tasting’ bottle, which had been completed in… 1998. True pioneers! Anyway, Hazelburn could also be ‘lighter’ however, nicely, it is not Auchentoshan, is it.
