Some glorious melon à queue rouge from the eponymous Jura area of France, extremely really useful!

Jura ‘French Oak’ (42%, OB, Particular Woods Collection’, +/-2020)
A humble NAS that’s, as I perceive it, an ex-bourbon Jura completed in French oak. Color: gold. Nostril: typical ‘Madeira-like’ Jura plus some caraway-y spices and inexperienced walnuts. I am reasonably keen on this profile, however I additionally know that the satan is on the palate with such set-ups. Mouth: some dissonances certainly. Yoghurt, cinnamon, walnuts, bitter fruits, mustard, a transparent dusty facet, a wee feinty facet (commonplace)… Some cardamom seeds as effectively. End: medium, reasonably on grapefruits and white pepper. Feedback: some dissonances on the palate, for my part, however some sides are clearly fascinating and even good. Good nostril.

Jura 10 yo (40%, OB, +/-2021)
We reasonably appreciated this one final time in 2018, with its fino-y, mustardy Juraness. Color: darkish straw. Nostril: not the identical ground, so to talk. It doesn’t appear like Jura’s make wants extra spices. Very good whiffs of recent almonds and walnuts, definitely some fino and/or manzanilla, a wee sooty facet, maybe some cider apples (let’s name them calvados apples when you do not thoughts), plus a little bit brine and thyme essence. Fairly keen on this nostril. Mouth: Jura’s dryness is apparent, however we’re definitely in the next league after that NAS. Salty white wines, tobacco, fino sherry, comfortable mustard, walnuts… End: medium lengthy, on related notes, with just a bit extra sweetness. Feedback: I’ve to say it’s reasonably troubling that the whisky of Jura would resemble some wines of Jura (un-ullaged savagnins) an increasing number of. Troubling and charming.

Jura 12 yo ‘The Bay’ (44%, OB, 1l, +/-2020)
As I perceive it this one spent its entire life in ex-bourbon barrels, and was then flash-finished in – may we’ve got a John-Bonham solo please? – Pedro Ximenez! We’re all amazed, I do know. Keep in mind, PX is the mayonnaise of whisky. Or maybe its ketchup. Color: full gold. Nostril: struck matches, gasoline, burnt eggplants and used fireworks at first (you would name this ‘smoke’ when you like), then some sorts of rubbery raisins. Mouth: a lot nicer on the palate, with some sugarcane juice, PX certainly, molasses, jams, crystallised citrus (maybe bergamots), honey… A thick mouthfeel right here, as if there had been ‘fairly’ some PX left within the casks. End: reasonably lengthy, reasonably good, with even a sense of peat as might be seen on the neighbouring island. Or in peated Juras, in fact. Feedback: simply neglect in regards to the nostril and go straight to the palate. I want the ten, having mentioned that.

Jura 30 yo 1990/2021 (47.2%, Suave Dodger, hogshead, cask #9005283)
These batches do have a superb status. Color: straw. Nostril: usually crisp coastal and fino-y nostril, refined, with recent bitter almonds, manzanilla this time once more, recent butter, seaside sand, leaven, mustard after which bitter beers. I’ve received strictly nothing in opposition to this profile; as a matter of truth, I find it irresistible. Mouth: it is received all of Jura’s lovable flaws, I’d say. It’s a little feinty, a little bit soapy, a little bit sulphury, a little bit an excessive amount of on paraffin as effectively, and but I discover this good. How would I put it, have you learnt the band The Stranglers? They’ve a bass participant, Jean-Jacques Burnell, who’s typically a tad behind (the anti-Jaco, if you’ll), which creates a really distinctive, very highly effective sound that many individuals simply love. Oh my, I doubt this was the place… Please forgive me. End: lengthy, with much more of these beautiful ‘flaws’. Salt, cleaning soap (or saponin), mustard, resins, walnuts, paraffin, bitter ale… Feedback: lengthy reside the small flaws in whisky! They create selection and enjoyable, bravo!

Jura 30 yo 1990/2020 (46.5%, Sansibar, tenth Anniversary, sherry cask, 246 bottles)
Color: white wine. Nostril: traditional. Smoked marshmallows, bitter cherries, gueuze, almonds, bone-dry chardonnay, extra chardonnay, much more chardonnay… Nicely I can not get chardonnay of Jura out of my head now. They’ve a varietal that is referred to as red-tail melon (melon à queue rouge) which is, certainly, a chardonnay. Great wines, extremely really useful. This wee whisky too, by the best way. Whiffs of bell pepper and stalk, which works extraordinarily effectively on this context. Mouth: completely splendid. Magnificent chalky citrus, with this faint smoky facet, nearly basaltic. I feel I will say no extra, however you would have this with meals. On ‘poularde demi-deuil’, maybe? Chez Bocuse or Mère Brazier in Lyons. However as soon as once more, this ain’t the place, sorry. End: lengthy, fats, on a few of the most splendid chardonnays. Citrusy aftertaste, which all the time works. Feedback: wow wow wow.
