Auchentoshan Three Wooden | WhiskyNotes evaluation

Auchentoshan Three Wood

It has been… three years since I’ve reviewed an Auchentoshan. Some distilleries simply don’t appear to be within the information that a lot and maintain going with the identical vary for years. Even the bottle remains to be largely the identical because the 2008 redesign.

As you already know Auchentoshan Three Wooden is a triple distilled Lowland single malt matured in 3 totally different cask sorts: initially bourbon casks, then a end in Oloroso casks after which in Pedro Ximénez casks. The final time I attempted it, I discovered it a bit unbalanced.

Auchentoshan Three Wooden (43%, OB +/- 2021)

Nostril: fairly some fragrant woody tones up entrance, like cigar packing containers and the sort of aromatic French oak that jogs my memory of economic cognac. Loads of cinnamon and nuts, in addition to grapes, cranberries, plum jam and blood oranges. Dried flower petals and a touch of lavender. Barely spin-doctored.

Mouth: praline and maple syrup, with a little bit of wooden bitterness on the one aspect and shiny floral notes on the opposite. Oranges once more, with ginger and cinnamon. Hints of Mon Chéri and blackberries. Brown sugar and cocoa powder. Tobacco leaves within the background. The spicy aspect turns into fairly tangy.

End: medium, with some natural wooden, toffee and good chocolate notes.

Nonetheless fairly unbalanced in my view, with the wooden wizardry overtaking the Lowland character. Not too dangerous although. Some folks like daring whisky with unusual flavours so throughout the in any other case fairly bland core vary this has a loyal following. Out there from Grasp of Malt and The Whisky Trade as an example.
