Whiskyfun

I imply, so far as numbers of various expressions go. Given what’s within the bins, I doubt that is going to alter within the close to future. Prepared for slightly extra colailafun.com, randomly? To the very common taster equivalent to yours really, randomness brings a little bit of salt and would decrease the percentages of developing with too many virtually equivalent whiskies, which might make all of it boring as Boris (apologies, could not resist).

Caol Ila 10 yo 2011/2021 (46%, Signatory Vintage for Whisky Live Paris, first fill bourbon barrel, cask #310866, 300 bottles)

Caol Ila 10 yo 2011/2021 (46%, Signatory Classic for Whisky Reside Paris, first fill bourbon barrel, cask #310866, 300 bottles) Four stars

That is this 12 months’s official bottling for WL Paris, a wonderful alternative I am positive. I hope to see you in there on the weekend, the final whisky competition I might attend, pre-Covid, having been Ulan-Bator 1927. Or was it 1926? Color: white wine. Nostril: roasted almonds this time, roasted sesame, roasted pine nuts, then the anticipated limoncello and seawater, with the suitable portions of tincture of iodine, creosote and simply barbecue ashes. Recent kelp and oysters too. Mouth: excellently recent, with slightly varnish and actually a variety of limoncello at first (feels larger than 46%), then extra rustic notes of paint and, effectively, much more varnish. It is moderately brutal, in reality, however that is a transparent asset since we have all already bought round 726,845 ‘common’ and ‘gentler’ bottles of Caol Ila in our drink cupboards. End: very lengthy, varnishy, medicinal, ashy, salty and with some chillies. Feedback: I simply could not think about how this boisterous younger CI can be at cask energy. Most likely unlawful anyway, until you have bought a firearms licence. See you at Whisky Reside Paris!

SGP:467 – 87 factors.

Caol Ila 8 yo (46%, James Eadie, Small Batch, export exclusive, 2021)

Caol Ila 8 yo (46%, James Eadie, Small Batch, export unique, 2021) Four stars

Color: white white wine. Yep. Nostril: a lot gentler, cleaner, on basic oysters, lemons, ashes and recent almonds. Seawater, mercurochrome, riesling and whiffs of nail polish. Mouth: impeccable, salty, maritime, barely bitter, with some grapefruit juice and the tightest sauvignon blanc. Ziiiing. End: lengthy, ashier, a tad gritty. Some turpentine, some white spirit, some concentrated lemon juice. Feedback: you possibly can’t resist these sorts of paint thinners, are you able to.

SGP:466 – 87 factors.

Caol Ila 9 yo 2011/2021 (50.4%, Chapter 7, Monologue, first fill barrel, 297 bottles)

Caol Ila 9 yo 2011/2021 (50.4%, Chapter 7, Monologue, first fill barrel, 297 bottles) Four stars

A monologue? In that case, to be, or to not be, that’s the query. Whether or not ’tis nobler within the thoughts to endure the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms towards a sea of troubles and of Caol Ila… Color: white wine. Nostril: a stroll on the seaside at 6am. Extremely recent and refreshing, fairly lighter in reality, with whiffs of chablis on oysters, riesling on langoustines and champagne on lobsters. Roughly. With water: lemon-sprinkled oysters. How very basic. Mouth (neat): quick and evident, even when slightly fattish and soiled right here and there, which isn’t very CI. Grilled bell pepper and barbecued bananas. Maybe slightly unsure and un-smoky this far, let’s have a look at… With water: no, cancel all that, it was simply in want of slightly H2O. Lemons, oysters, ashes; I repeat… End: medium, lemony. Feedback: wonderful, even when a tad much less ‘evident’ than others. Similar to Shakespeare.

SGP:456 – 85 factors.

Caol Ila 8 yo 2012/2021 (51.4%, Chapter 7, Monologue, hogshead, 301 bottles)

Caol Ila 8 yo 2012/2021 (51.4%, Chapter 7, Monologue, hogshead, 301 bottles) Four stars and a half

2012? That is yesterday, no? An no, no Shakespeare. Color: white wine. Nostril: it’s considerably youthful however imagine me, that is simpler, rounder, cleaner, ‘higher’ Caol Ila by WF requirements. Linseed oil, Woolite, bandages, brake fluid, whelks and oysters, lambswool… In brief an entire completely different dimension. With water: ointments, carbon mud, limestone and linseed oil. Mouth (neat): terrific ultra-clean younger CI, very salty, coastal and with even a wee inexperienced olive within the center (they’re going to quickly develop some round Ullapool, imagine me). With water: salty as salty mezcal, slightly tough across the edges, maybe a tad eau-de-vie-ish. Uncooked plum spirit (higher after midnight). End: lengthy, robust and salty. Am I not discovering capers within the aftertaste? Feedback: this one’s slightly insane. Adore it at occasions, hate it at occasions, what’s positive is that CI is totally not the ‘mild Islay’ from the whisky books anymore.

SGP:366 – 88 factors.

Caol Ila 13 yo 2007/2021 (54.1%, The Whisky Blues and Dram Youth Whisky Bar, refill hogshead, cask #320555, 276 bottles)

Caol Ila 13 yo 2007/2021 (54.1%, The Whisky Blues and Dram Youth Whisky Bar, refill hogshead, cask #320555, 276 bottles) Four stars

Love these labels, they continue to be each completely different and stylish. I imply, a number of the new indie labels simply make you wish to poke your personal eyes out, do they not? Color: white wine. Nostril: big varnish, nail polish remover, ammonia and gherkin juice. All is ok, is it not? With water: no modifications. Extra ammonia and antiseptic, paint thinner, inexperienced lemons, mannequin glue… Mouth (neat): wham! Excessive arrival, extraordinarily acetic, near the ‘highest’ Jamaican rums. Barely authorized, I say. With water: means nicer, simpler, and but extraordinarily salty and acetic – I am not saying vinegary on goal. Oysters are quickly to take over,  along with lemons and the tightest white wines. End: you can not do away with a lot varnish, are you able to. Loopy stuff. Feedback: jogs my memory of some New Yarmouths I attempted the opposite day. How do you rating these bacter… I imply this whisky? In fact I really like this excessive CI, nonetheless.

SGP:377 – 87 factors.

That is getting robust, a final one please…

Caol Ila 13 yo 2007/2021 (57.8%, The Whisky Blues, refill hogshead, cask #320319, 160 bottles)

One other one by, or moderately for our buddies in Taiwan. Color: white wine. Nostril: that is a lot gentler, rounder, extra on grasses and recent nuts, whelks and crabs, ripe apples, hand cream, Chablis, almond ‘milk’ (you possibly can’t name that ‘milk’ anymore within the EU)… With water: oil paint and recent marzipan plus white asparagus, branches and celeriac. Excessive-class. Mouth (neat): fully completely different, ultra-tight, acidic and acetic. Requires hectolitres of water. With (hectolitres of) water: laborious to tame, with ammonia once more (cheese), acids, concentrated brines, Sicilian capers, varied ferments, earth, roots, gentian… Boy is that this a battle! End: iodine, vinegar and concentrated lemon juice. Sharp and ultra-tight, virtually bacterial as soon as once more. Love this model however it’s important to be in form. Feedback: one other new-wave mad and fairly difficult Caol Ila. You simply can not binge-try too lots of them or they’re going to pressure you out of enterprise. No, actually, they’re unimaginable.
