Caol Ila on the desk once more

A.Ok.A. the certain wager or the peater that by no means disappoints. #1 malt whisky on little WF so far as numbers of various expressions go, and that will not change any time quickly.

crabs
Caol Ila crabs nonetheless ate up distillery waste again then, finest in ye entire world->

Caol Ila 19 yo 2001/2021 (57.6%, Gordon & MacPhail, Connoisseurs Choice for The Whisky Exchange, first fill barrel, cask #308900, 192 bottles)

Caol Ila 19 yo 2001/2021 (57.6%, Gordon & MacPhail, Connoisseurs Selection for The Whisky Trade, first fill barrel, cask #308900, 192 bottles) Three stars and a half

CI, G&M, CC, TWE, that is a basic set-up. Color: mild gold. Nostril: totally on cigar ashes and different ashes, vanilla, sawdust, peat smoke and toasted cake. Bonfire and barbecue. No seawater/oysters and no lemons this time, which is a bit of uncommon. With water: similar, plus a medicinal facet. Iodine, gauze… Mouth (neat): salt, brine, seawater and oysters this time, even when the core stays extraordinarily ashy. Some tapenade within the background (crushed olives with anchovies and garlic – properly all households have their very own recipes). With water: I am questioning of the barrel wasn’t a bit of too energetic for Caol Ila. Do not get me mistaken, it is somewhat good Caol Ila, however I have a tendency to love them ‘more energizing’. End: similar feeling, some peppery oak, vanilla, a bit of fudge… Feedback: a barely oak-boosted variant, excellent for certain however maybe additionally a bit of fats across the corners.

SGP:456 – 84 factors.

Caol Ila 10 yo 2011/2021 (54%, Thompson Bros., de-char/re-char hogshead, 333 bottles)

Caol Ila 10 yo 2011/2021 (54%, Thompson Bros., de-char/re-char hogshead, 333 bottles) Three stars and a half

Color: gold. Nostril: you do really feel that it has been boosted-up with some reactivated oak, somewhat within the fashion of the G&M CC, however this time they’re somewhat smoked almonds an lapsang souchong which can be enjoying first fiddles. Somewhat extra plasticine too. With water: ashes and coconut. Not hundred % certain. Mouth (neat): large smoky butterscotch and salty ale. One thing like that. With water: ah, there, the spirit’s having the higher hand now, it was about time. Sauvignon blanc, lemon juice, rhubarb, oyster juice. Somewhat coconut once more within the aftertaste. End: lengthy, a tad fats for CI. Smoked muffins or one thing. Oily aftertaste. Feedback: similar ballpark. An attention-grabbing variant however there’s a bit of an excessive amount of ‘candy and coating’ oak for me.

SGP:656 – 83 factors.

Caol Ila 10 yo 2010/2021 (52.9%, Thompson Bros., refill hogshead, 500 bottles)

Caol Ila 10 yo 2010/2021 (52.9%, Thompson Bros., refill hogshead, 500 bottles) Four stars

Welcome again to civilisation ;-). Color: white wine. Nostril: there, crabs, French beans, younger Comté cheese, bandages, ashes, smoky porridge (properly, porridge with a very good glass of Caol Ila thrown in), limestone, mashed potatoes… With water: excellent beers and sourdough. Leaven. Mouth (neat): good sharp younger chiselled CI, with plenty of apple juice, then salt, seawater, lapsang, lemon and mercurochrome. NO quibbles this time. With water: wonderful, with first-grade lemons. End: lengthy, medicinal, bandage-y. Feedback: all proper. Pure refill all the way in which.

SGP:456 – 87 factors.

Caol Ila 10 yo 2010/2021 (54.2%, Thompson Bros. for London Whisky Club, 294 bottles)

Caol Ila 10 yo 2010/2021 (54.2%, Thompson Bros. for London Whisky Membership, 294 bottles) Four stars and a half

Only one query, is Boris a member of the London Whisky Membership? Color: white wine. Nostril: bicycle internal tube and new magazines, porridge, ink, bandages… That is impeccable. With water: similar. Impeccable. A tad extra rubbery than the earlier one, however that might be good rubber. Mouth (neat): salty, coastal, smoky, pure, clear, sharp, chiselled. With water: some immaculate smoky brine. End: similar. Powerful younger CI, toughness being an utter asset on this context. Tarry olives within the aftertaste – olives at all times win it, tarry ones much more so. Feedback: large younger boy, somewhat of South-Coast fashion. I might pour this into my most important hipflask! (the one with a Tom-Petty-and-the-Heartbreakers brand).

SGP:357 – 88 factors.

Nah, oak’s not at all times your good friend; Let’s transfer on…

Caol Ila 13 yo 2008/2021 (55.4%, Signatory Vintage for malt, grain & cane, hogshead, cask #300057, 292 bottles)

Caol Ila 13 yo 2008/2021 (55.4%, Signatory Classic for malt, grain & cane, hogshead, cask #300057, 292 bottles) Four stars and a half

We’re anticipating some form of purity right here… Color: white wine. Nostril: sharp smoky porridge, ink, ashes, eggplants, olives, hessian, tarry ropes, kelp… Pristine. With water: carbolineum and leatherette, then gravel and seaside pebbles. Mouth (neat): late-harvest riesling, smoked and peppered, plus a bit of butterscotch. With water: immaculate younger Caol Ila, extraordinarily exhausting to beat. End: lengthy, salty, pure, excellent. Feedback: we’re nonetheless anticipating all these new distilleries in SCO to make a correct peater. No, dumping your make into ex-Laphroaig casks doesn’t depend, that is even ueber-lousy. Don’t lower corners.

SGP:357 – 88 factors.

Maybe some multi-vintage by The Sponge?…

Caol Ila 9 yo 2007+2011/2021 (53.6%, WhiskySponge, 481 bottles)

Caol Ila 9 yo 2007+2011/2021 (53.6%, WhiskySponge, 481 bottles) Four stars

A brainwave by our pricey Sponge, assembling some completely all proper ex-refill CI with some reasonably embarrassing ex-de-char/re-char American oak hoggie CI. What might go mistaken? Color: straw. Nostril: good, just a bit indefinite. Outdated hessian bag discovered on a seaside and a few curiously sweetened seashells. Would anybody dare stew mussels or oysters in vanilla sauce? With water: okay, even excellent, somewhat reminding me of the official vary. Mouth (neat): good, however I am unsure I am getting why this little fatness across the edges. With water: good however form of in midstream. End: good however a tad candy. Feedback: truthfully, it is excellent, however it form of reminds of that outdated Vietnam poster that we have been all having in our bedrooms within the early Nineteen Seventies and that was simply asking ‘Why?’ (subsequent to that bl*^dy Che Guevara).

SGP:556 – 85 factors.

Caol Ila 13 yo 2008/2021 (59.7%, Gordon & MacPhail, Connoisseurs Choice or LMDW, first fill bourbon barrel, cask #312075, 562 bottles)

Caol Ila 13 yo 2008/2021 (59.7%, Gordon & MacPhail, Connoisseurs Selection for LMDW, first fill sherry butt, cask #312075, 562 bottles) Four stars

562 bottles from a single barrel, that is somewhat quite a bit, no? However who’s counting? Color: gold. Nostril: it is ex-first fill however it’s a straighter, purer one, extra medicinal than others, extra on embrocations, bandages, iodine, then fish oils, creosote, mud, uncooked wool, even moist canines (we owe you eternally, canines!)… With water: much more medicinal. Mercurochrome. The first fill wooden didn’t kill it. Mouth (neat): completely excellent, somewhat resinous, vegetal (oregano), with wee chemical notes (nothing too severe, somewhat round plastic baggage, or somewhat rubber bands) and a grassy smokiness. With water: properly, there’s a bit of extra oaky sweetness, which ain’t too god in my guide, however it’s well-behaved vanilla and coconut. Nonetheless, too unhealthy… End: somewhat lengthy, a bit of candy(ish). Feedback: extraordinarily good as soon as once more, however the sweetish 1st fill American oak feels ultimately – whereas it misplaced two factors. Do not forget that in whisky, oak is the very best good friend and the worst enemy.

SGP:556 – 86 factors.

Replace: there had been some mismatch in some paperwork, it was not a primary fill bourbon barrel contrarily to what I had first written. Thanks Claude.

What’s somewhat terrifying is that we at the moment have not bought any late Nineteen Seventies-early Eighties CI within the containers…

Caol Ila 13 yo 2007/2021 (58.1%, The Whisky Blues, refill hogshead, cask #320327)

Caol Ila 13 yo 2007/2021 (58.1%, The Whisky Blues, refill hogshead, cask #320327) Four stars and a half

Color: white wine. Nostril: that is going to be fast. Sharp lemon, chalk, seashells, mercurochrome. With water: chalk, uncooked wool, porridge… Mouth (neat): the prevalence of refill over first fill showcased and demonstrated. Great sharp, chiselled, ultra-vertical peppery and smoky embrocations and medicines. Oh, and oysters. And lemons. With water: yeah, pristine, ultra-tight and tense, with these coastal coatings (lobster?) End: lengthy, wealthy and but tight, and excellent. Feedback: high-class bluesy Caol Ila, with some energy. I am considering of Poppa Chubby (google is your good friend – properly it is not in any respect, however you see what I imply).

SGP:467 – 88 factors.
