Celebrating Bastille Day
with just a few Glen Moray

We may have had French whiskies however we went for some Glen Moray as an alternative, because it’s French group La Martiniquaise that purchased the distillery and the model from one other French group, Glenmorangie Ltd, round ten years in the past or slightly extra. Ha, the French. I consider the popularity of Glen Moray has improved, though the identify at all times had its unapologetic aficionados. All you needed to do was to keep away from a number of the actually unusual early wine finishings.

Glen Moray 10 yo 'Fired Oak' (40%, OB, +/-2020)

Glen Moray 10 yo ‘Fired Oak’ (40%, OB, +/-2020) Two stars and a half
This child’s mentioned to have been impressed by bourbon. What a humorous concept. It has been completed in closely charred American oak, not too positive in the event that they’ve pushed it to alligator-grade burning. Oh and no chardonnay this time (WF 79). Color: straw. Nostril: completely not the sweetness and mellowness of bourbon, no caramel, no toffee, no large vanilla, no popcorn and no coconut and even rye-y touches, reasonably a really dry grassy and rooty mixture, with slightly recent ginger and turmeric, then luggage of autumn leaves and reasonably walnut skins. Slightly Campari. Mouth: similar feeling, it isn’t candy and rounded, reasonably on heavyish cinnamon and bitter herbs earlier than it will, certainly, grow to be slightly extra vanilla-ed, with some citrus. Some sawdust, pencil shavings, extra grass. End: not that quick however grassy. Pears. Feedback: fairly okay. The value stays reasonably budgety (S.!) Not a nasty drop in any respect.

Glen Moray 12 yo 2008/2020 (49.5%, Fadandel.dk, 1st fill oloroso quarter cask, cask #28B, 135 bottles)

Glen Moray 12 yo 2008/2020 (49.5%, Fadandel.dk, 1st fill oloroso quarter cask, cask #28B, 135 bottles) Four stars
Color: gentle gold. Nostril: very nutty sherry, with a mixture of walnut cake and chicory espresso. Some toffee too, contact of muscovado, a pinch of floor clove, and slightly ras el hanout. That is all very high-quality and really nicely, this has been nicely made, with fashionable (albeit good) wooden know-how. Mouth: wealthy, spicy, superb in the event you like deep walnut liqueur and, certainly ras el hanout. Extra toffee and butterscotch too, fudge, café latte, even touches of garam masala. All is nicely. End: lengthy, with much more walnuts, inexperienced ones this time, and slightly curry maybe. Feedback: feels mike some charring’s been happening, which appears to have labored extraordinarily nicely.
SGP:461 – 86 factors.

Glen Moray 12 yo 2007/2020 (53.6%, Golden Cask, bourbon, cask #CM258, 204 bottles)

Glen Moray 12 yo 2007/2020 (53.6%, Golden Cask, bourbon, cask #CM258, 204 bottles) Four stars
Color: white wine. Nostril: this one’s all pure, completely spirit-driven, and actually reasonably on grist and porridge, leaven bread, sourdough, moist plaster… Apples within the background. With water: extra of all that, with maybe extra fruits, reasonably round shy ones, starfruits, gooseberries, greengages… Mouth (neat): very stable malt, on grapefruits, beer, bread and touches of yeast. Viva la nature! With water: certainly much less advanced than the ex-oloroso, which is regular, however there’s one thing very sincere to this, one thing very… yeah, pure. End: similar. Medium size, inexperienced fruits and bread doughs. Feedback: it doesn’t fairly convey the home down, however I get pleasure from this fashion and respect the honesty in right here. If you happen to see what I imply…
SGP:441 – 85 factors.

Glen Moray 2007/2019 (50%, Scyfion Choice, Areni Noir finish, 132 bottles)

Glen Moray 2007/2019 (46%, Scyfion Alternative, Foursquare end, 97 bottles) Four stars
There’s numerous literature on the again label however I am afraid it is written in Cyrillic, since that is an Ukrainian bottling. Let’s do that wee combined (not sham) marriage… Color: straw. Nostril: the whisky’s saved the higher hand, which is all that counts in my ebook. Ale, baguette and leaven bread, contact of butter, then apple pie, damson tarte, after which certainly notes of rum, reasonably round bananas flambéed and simply rum baba. Blends nicely however to be sincere, good malt whisky and Foursquare aren’t, in my ebook, full strangers to one another. I imply philosophically. Mouth: a tad tenser and bitterer maybe, with a faint feeling of toothpaste (mint, eucalyptus), then good well-behaved fruits, round apples and inexperienced bananas. End: lengthy, on related notes, with some surprising touches of salt within the aftertaste. This one performs along with your lips. Feedback: a really wonderful wee variant.
SGP:541 – 85 factors.

I at all times appreciated Scyfion’s humorous proposals, let’s have extra…

Glen Moray 2007/2019 (50%, Scyfion Choice, Areni Noir finish, 132 bottles)

Glen Moray 2007/2019 (50%, Scyfion Alternative, Areni Noir end, 132 bottles) Three stars and a half
Inform me a few awful wine fanatic, would you consider that I had by no means, ever heard of Areni Noir? What I am gathering is that it was a particularly outdated high-altitude Armenian varietal that is now been replanted. Certain the time period ‘noir’ sounds slightly French, however I don’t suppose Areni Noir’s ever been planted in my generally unusual residence nation. Color: onion peel, or ‘partridge eye’ (oeil de perdrix). Nostril: the factor is, Glen Moray’s no Ardbeg or Clynelish, so I might say it may take any ending with out many dangers. On this case, and that is not solely due to the color, we’re not that removed from a rosé de Provence. So positive it smells slightly vinous. With water: greater than okay, it’s fairly good. Jogs my memory of Belgian Kriek beer, not solely due to the color. Mouth (neat): fairly good, does not fairly really feel like a premix, reasonably like if somebody had thrown raspberries into the mash. So it stays whisky and I’m not completely in opposition to this. Even when it is not my most popular fashion of whisky, naturally. With water: not unhealthy in any respect, quite the opposite. Candy, malty, grapey. End: similar with a peppery, additionally nearly stalky aspect. Some liquorice too. Feedback: I am not saying I might select this over Clynelish 1965, however there, it is a good drop with an actual feeling of ‘some place’.
SGP:541 – 83 factors.

Maybe some brutes by the SMWS now?…

Glen Moray 18 yo 2001/2020 (56.7%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, 1st fill bourbon barrel, #35.265, 'Meditation Medication', 181 bottles)

Glen Moray 18 yo 2001/2020 (56.7%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, 1st fill bourbon barrel, #35.265, ‘Meditation Treatment’, 181 bottles) Four stars
Meditation Treatment, ha, I suppose that one was too good to overlook and in spite of everything, each alliterations and wealthy rhymes don’t kill anybody anymore. Color: straw. Nostril: I am unsure we would really feel the older age, however it’s bought good flints, grist, chalk, weissbeer, then vanilla and ‘barrel mangos’. I feel it is fairly good. With water: jelly infants, marshmallows, vanilla and orange desserts. The very spongey ones… Mouth (neat): actually superb, rounder, but tight, with slightly varnish plus pear and pineapple liqueurs, and certainly reasonably numerous vanilla. Foam bananas (apologies, pricey SMWS). With water: swims extraordinarily nicely. Fruit salad, fruit cake, jellybeans, earl gray, contact of cherry mints. End: of excellent size, candy, fruity, bonbony. Feedback: superb, very simple, very docile, very versatile.
SGP:641 – 86 factors.

Glen Moray 24 yo 1995/2020 (53.5%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, The Gathering, 1st fill bourbon barrel, #35.259, 'Rumtopf, birnenbrot and stollen', 222 bottles)

Glen Moray 24 yo 1995/2020 (53.5%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, The Gathering, 1st fill bourbon barrel, #35.259, ‘Rumtopf, birnenbrot and stollen’, 222 bottles) Four stars
Candy Wotan, should not they’ve reasonably named this one ‘Rumtopf, Birnenbrot Und Stollen’? Hoppla… Color: gentle gold. Nostril: I can not not consider Glenmorangie right here. Very mushy, mellow, on mushy banana cream, sponge cake, Jaffa desserts, overripe apples… Actually the fashion of a malt that hasn’t bought a lot character, with out being empty in any respect. Pears. These tall stills, you recognize (we’re speaking ’bout Glenmo). With water: bonbons and Grand-Marnier, with a drop of gentian spirit. Which, as you very nicely know, will treatment something. Mouth (neat): tighter than anticipated and actually completely on stewed orchard fruits. Mirabelles, apples, pears, plums, peaches, and so forth. plus some barley syrup. With water: williams pears, mirabelles, maybe guavas, plus gentle corn bread and a drop of coconut water. End: quick to medium, reasonably caky and really mushy. Finger biscuits dipped into actual Champagne (not shampanskoye, pricey Mr Putin). Feedback: one other comparatively lighter outdated Glen Moray. Not mindboggling, however superb.
SGP:641 – 85 factors.

Talking of outdated Glen Moray, let’s have a final one…

Glen Moray-Glenlivet 20 yo 1977/1997 (63%, Cadenhead, Authentic Collection)

Glen Moray-Glenlivet 20 yo 1977/1997 (63%, Cadenhead, Genuine Assortment) Two stars
As I generally say, it is reassuring to study from the label that CAD are utilizing oak casks and never plywood straight from Ikea or, sob, Residence Depot. Color: gentle gold. Nostril: it was a fatter, but in addition a feintier spirit, extra on craft beer, low wine, bitter fruit juice, fermenting cherries, whey, fermenting bananas… What an adventurous nostril! With water: wooden glue! Unsure we should always have added water, my pal. Mouth (neat): oh the nice outdated instances when high quality management was achieved on the pub. That is actually extra-wacky, bitter and acidic, very fermentary, with some metallic sides and one thing that is simply not proper. Anti-rust paint? Plastic? With water: does not enhance mucho, besides that you will discover extra elderberry liqueur and a few dried fermented litchis. Which is all an acquired style, I might add. End: medium, on one thing like candy wine that began to referment – or one thing. Fish oil, toothpaste, paper and carbon within the aftertaste. Feedback: ah the nice outdated instances of free whisky. I imply, free whisky as in free jazz. It is bought one thing very charming, however alternatively, let’s stay sincere…
SGP:462 – 70 factors.

(Thanks Pierre-Alexandre and Tim)
