Eight Fettercairn for enjoyable and from a fan
|
|
|
It is all the time a pleasure to strive some ‘weird’ Fettercairns, though it should be stated that we have stumbled upon some latest expressions which have been far more ‘superb’ than, properly, ‘fairly weird’. As we speak, let’s add randomness to the enjoyable… |
|
Fettercairn 16 yo (46.4%, OB, 2nd launch, +/-2022)
We have tried the brand new 16 again in 2020 however it is a newer batch. Let’s do that fast… Color: gold. Nostril: pretty and strange. Dry Madeira, mustard, carbon mud, roasted sesame oil, pinewood, plasticine and paraffin, drop of vinegar, backyard peat, black cigars, bitter wine… Actually a malt like no different. Good enjoyable. Mouth: extremely completely different, beginning proper on thick stout and smoked mussels, occurring with the anticipated mustard, cedar wooden, oude (previous) genever, extra wax, then loads of marmalade and earth. A drop of amontillado too, some cinnamon… I discover this superb. End: lengthy, with bitter almonds, walnuts and paraffin working the present, then bitter oranges within the aftertaste, with a bit of linseed oil. Feedback: cautious, these uncommon Fettercairns will develop on you, as they did and nonetheless do with me. Nice enhancements for fairly some years now.

Fettercairn 12 yo 2008/2021 (51.5%, Asta Morris, refill oloroso, cask #AM113, 240 bottles)
A brand new livery at Asta Morris’s and all the time a humorous frog on the label. I’ve to say this ongoing tribute to the French stays extremely appreciated at Château Whiskyfun. Color: gold. Nostril: humorous glues, putties, acetone, nail polish, walnuts, varnishes and glutamate. Maggi and Trappiste beer (however in fact). With water: drier, extra mustardy, somewhat extra on plasticine too. Notes of black truffles. Mouth (neat): very wealthy, thick, all on chocolate, espresso, extra walnuts and a few rooster bouillon plus triple-sec. A great deal of enjoyable, chill this and have with shrimp croquettes! With water: a bit of rounder and sweeter, in the direction of English brown sauce maybe, extra triple-sec, candy bitters, a bit of salt, tangerine pores and skin (chen-pi)… End: very lengthy, a bit of sweeter but. Kumquats are again, some liquorice wooden, a bit of salt and pepper, a drop of miso soup. A contact of lavender within the aftertaste. Feedback: immense enjoyable and a fantastic variant after the OB, whereas it remained extraordinarily ‘Fettercairn’.

Fettercairn 12 yo 2008/2021 (53.4%, The Whisky Mercenary, Draconological Society, bourbon hogshead)
Seems to be like pataphysics have discovered their homeland in Belgium, let’s give our mates a rousing ovation. However draconological? Color: white wine. Nostril: are you aware white balsamico? Proper, and UHU glue? Rotting strawberries and bananas? Lily flowers? Prickly pears? With water: far more fermentary. Sourdough, wash, beers after which plasticine. Mouth (neat): a lot much less ‘whacko’ in your palate however a bit of brutal, sizzling and grassy. A great deal of pear and apple peelings, plus a glass of muscadet and one in every of bone-dry Breton cider. Salud. With water: sweeter fruits, particularly blood oranges. Notes of barley syrup. Within the background, Outdated Fettercairn’s peppery mustards and waxy walnuts enjoying Statler and Waldorf. End: lengthy, peppery. Pears within the aftertaste. Feedback: you’d virtually swear there was some very dry sherry in there, whereas apparently, there was none. Nice drop, nonetheless.

Fettercairn 12 yo 2009/2021 (53.7%, Liquid Treasures, Winter Version, refill sherry, 132 bottles)
A winter version, so we must be fast as spring is right here! Color: white wine. Very refill, that sherry. Nostril: no. Extra trendy, with some butterscotch and café latte past the anticipated bouillons, soups, sauces, parsleys, gunpowder, struck matches, truffles, mustards and varnishy esters. I am unable to wait so as to add a bit of water… With water: previous weapons and cabbage soup, artichokes… Mouth (neat): salty and virtually peaty, definitely very peppery, mustardy, bitter and considerably sulphury. Not in a nasty method, thoughts you. With water: a combat in your palate. Tobacco, Jerusalem artichoke, celeriac, leather-based, tobacco, bouillons, mustard… End: lime juice, caipirinha and truffles. Feedback: like loads however this one was a bit of tougher, maybe a bit of unlikely at occasions. Possibly somewhat for the genuinely adventurous whisky fanatic.

Fettercairn 14 yo 2007/2021 (55.3%, Cadenhead, Annual Store Launch, Whisky & Extra Baden, Palo Cortado Hogshead, 288 bottles)
This child was completed, not totally matured in palo cortado. Color: gold. Nostril: plainly the sherry considerably tamed Fettercairn’s fiery character, as we’re somewhat discovering shortbread, puréed chestnuts, butterscotch, some barely meaty toffee, café latte and a few Mars bars. A light-weight leathery earthiness within the background. With water: no, an exquisite earthiness, within the entrance. Compost, tobacco, cracked pepper, umami sauce. It loves water! Mouth (neat): somewhat within the model of some latest OBs, between oranges, candy mustard sauce, walnut wine and malt extracts. Ovomaltine/Ovaltine, maybe. With water: some saltiness, extra bouillons, parsley, chives, lemon, Szechuan sauce, contact of caramel… End: lengthy, on comparable notes, going in the direction of salt and lemon marmalade within the aftertaste. Feedback: terrific. The palo cortado feels however that is all nice information, with some nice tangoing between the spirit and the wine.

Fettercairn 14 yo 2007/2021 (55.1%, Thompson Bros., 2 refill barrels, 508 bottles)
Aren’t the Thompsons’ labels turning into much more artsy nowadays? And a unicorn, does that bode properly? Color: white wine. Nostril: one other one that doesn’t nostril because it appears. It feels a lot ‘darker’, with somewhat loads of walnut wine, oloroso (sure I’ve seen these had been barrels, refill at that), a pack of skinny mints, gravy, simply malt, ras-el-hanout, vanilla-ed chestnut cream and burnt demerara sugar. With water: earthier. Compost this time once more, the blackest black chocolate, espresso dregs, deep-roasted nuts… Mouth (neat): very good mustardy and earthy arrival, very tense, then big pepper. What a monster. Café latte within the background. With water: fruits have been unleased however this malty and peppery earthiness stays big. Cloves and juniper in abundance. End: very lengthy and saltier. Chive and onion soup, oloroso. I do know, I do know, barrels. Feedback: this one ought to make for an utter star at blind tastings. I’d suppose solely Fettercairn might style this closely sherried whereas it is by no means. Loopy malt whisky.

Maybe a monstrous older one…

Fettercairn 21 yo 1996/2018 (63.5%, Fadandel.dk, Chosen by the Swede, hogshead, cask #4333, 218 bottles)
Assuming they stuffed the cask at 63.5% vol., this needs to be essentially the most conservative malt whisky ever. So to talk. Color: gentle gold. Nostril: grassy, robust, sizzling. With water: earthy notes, bouillon, liquorice… It is most likely a bit of arduous to get proper – we might want an digital pipette – however there are similarities with umami sauce. Oh, and with Ben Nevis. Mouth (neat): malt, oranges, Pink Bull and low, and loads of ethanol. With water: ah sure, Ben Nevis. Bitter oranges, tobacco, waxes, salty soup, contact of espresso, miso, pepper, a dollop of seawater, lime juice… End: much more of all that whereas it is getting ultra-tight. Pepper and riesling within the aftertaste. Feedback: I am undecided it was displaying that I liked this one. Thoughts you, it is a 1996. Properly, wasn’t it a mislabelled Ben Nevis, by any likelihood?

No marvel some Swede chosen that child. Anyway, let’s have that well-known final one for the highway… (I am certain they will jail me someday)…

Fettercairn 2006/2017 (45%, L’Esprit, Golden Barley, cask #107733, 350 bottles)
This French one needs to be gentler. We do want gentleness nowadays, will we not. Color: white wine. Nostril: softer certainly. Mustard and sunflower oil, cardboard, chalk, pepper, almond milk, chalk, sourdough, pancakes and recent croissants. Mouth: simply superb, brighter than the others, fruitier and simpler (pineapples, apples and pears), malty, just a bit much less Fettercairny, if we might use these 2-pence barbarisms. End: medium, fruitier. Danishes, pineapple tarte, lemon tarte, inexperienced pepper… Lemon juice within the aftertaste. Feedback: nice malty and fruity drop, a bit of cleaner than the others. As soon as once more, I’d have cried wolf, ought to you’ve got stated this was a younger Ben Nevis.
