Two new wines from our mates in Sonoma’s Dutcher Crossing.
2019 Dutcher Crossing Chardonnay Costello Winery – This Alexander Valley chardonnay bursts with notes of coconut and guava, then strikes into Meyer lemon and baking spice notes. A bit doughy and unctuous, as you’d anticipate from a Sonoma chardonnay, the oak affect drops ample vanilla notes into the combo, ultimately ending on a mild milk chocolate character. It’s a tremendous little journey that’s basic California chardonnay from begin to end. A- / $40
2018 Dutcher Crossing Cabernet Sauvignon Proprietor’s Reserve – A silky mix of 80% cabernet and 20% syrah from the Dry Creek Valley. Lush notes of semi-sweet fruit evoke components of strawberry, raspberry, and currants, all in a cohesive swirl. It’s decidedly elegant, showcasing smooth notes of milk chocolate and vanilla. A modest however agreeable tannin element offers the wine a little bit gravity, nevertheless it by no means hits as overbearing or brutish. Moderately, a gently creamy physique helps mood among the wine’s lighter notes of graphite and licorice, whereas easing the tartness of the blackberry-infused end. A very stable purchase at this value. A- / $36
