Evaluation: Purple Wines of San Felice, 2022 Releases

Lately we reviewed a pair of wines from Italy’s San Felice. We’re again with a second shot of those wines, all sangiovese-based choices.

2019 San Felice Il Grigio Chianti Classico Riserva – A delicate Chianti, with light cherry and strawberry notes, a contact of vanilla, and a definite notice of milk chocolate clinging to the end. The spice and vibrance iconic to Chianti are muted right here, this expression acquitting itself as a decidedly light model of the basic wine. A contact of black pepper on the end helps to liven issues up, however not overwhelmingly so. B / $26

2017 San Felice Poggio Rosso Chianti Classico Gran Selezione – The step up with this Gran Selezione launch is straight away noticeable, with a denser, rounder physique that takes its black cherry core and informs it with notes of rhubarb and cloves. It’s aromatic and fairly on the nostril, with a brooding — however approachable — high quality to the palate. Notes of blackberry and violet each seem on the lasting end. Versatile and laborious to place down. A / $58

2017 San Felice Campogiovanni Brunello di Montalcino DOCG – Lush blackberry notes and a gently beefy high quality give this wine an expressive fruitiness, adopted by a peppery character and a layer of recent inexperienced herbs. Tannic however balanced, this might use a little bit further time in bottle, but it surely’s ingesting effectively at present, with a punchy end that gives notes of graphite, darkish chocolate, and only a contact of tar.  Cellar for now, drink if you happen to should. A- / $62
