Gordon & MacPhail have simply launched the second version of their Mr George Legacy collection. It’s a Glen Grant 1957, bottled after 64 years of maturation in a primary fill sherry butt. Whereas this was laid down ‘Mr George’, as George Urquhart was recognized to those that knew him greatest, was on the helm of the enterprise.
You might need to examine to the primary version which was the Glen Grant 1953 Mr George.
Glen Grant 64 yo 1957 ‘Mr George Legacy’ (56,1%, Gordon & MacPhail 2021, first fill sherry butt #3438, 298 btl.)
Nostril: as you could know Oloroso means scented or odorous in Spanish. Effectively, that is muy Oloroso. It exhibits cherries and raspberries (candy and bitter), with orange marmalade, orange peels and candied ginger. Within the background there are elegant resinous notes, pine forest, cigars and polished cedar. Hints of brandy. Some cardamom and cinnamon. Additionally refined natural tea and a puff of smoke within the distance. Briefly, fairly heady, vibrant, complicated and actually stunning.
Mouth: very dense and highly effective. The wooden is powerful, instantly delivering natural notes (thyme, mint and eucalyptus). Coupled to that is chestnut honey, a faint chocolate dryness, resins and loads of pipe tobacco notes. Mid-palate it bursts into bitter cherries and prunes with hints of pink grapefruit and bergamot behind them (rancio fashion). Additionally liquorice, aniseed and Chinese language all-spice in the long run. A charred trace as nicely.
End: very lengthy, drying and natural. Some blackberries, marmalade, tobacco and oak char.
An actual gem once more. Whereas I’d say there is a bit more charred oak affect than within the first version, it’s nonetheless a massively complicated, fantastic whisky. You get all of the richness of a first-fill sherry cask, together with a touch of Nineteen Fifties smoke, and little plain wooden general. Certainly one other magnificence. It is going to be out there for £ 6000, contact Gordon & MacPhail or retailers like The Whisky Alternate or Grasp Of Malt.
