Glen Spey 13 yo 2008/2021 (53.6%, Watt Whisky, sherry hogshead)
Apparently, this child was completed for just a few months in that sherry hogshead. Color: gold. Nostril: very leafy, bitter, with many inexperienced walnuts, thick ale, then a bit menthol and Chinese language bitter prune sauce. A contact of recent paint; some fresh-sawn pinewood. Really agency and far nicer than it sounds, don’t fret. With water: takes off, nearly actually. Massive moist northern-Alsatian walnut cake (any walnut cake, actually), rum-soaked marzipan, Mozartkugeln, maybe a bit salsify for good measure. Mouth (neat): punchy, moderately thick, with good bitters, burnt raisins, bitter cherries, peppers, bell pepper, candy and spicy sauce (Chinese language once more)… Pleasantly hardy, I’d say. With water: the big walnut cake is again, whereas the peppers would not have left the scene. So, inexperienced walnuts. Notes of grape stalk, maybe. End: lengthy, with some peppered and gingered cappuccino, ought to anybody ever make that. Grassy aftertaste. Feedback: it loves water.

Glen Spey-Glenlivet 17 yo 2001/2019 (53.3%, Cadenhead, Small Batch, 2 bourbon hogsheads)
Color: white wine. Nostril: a grassy and chalky bare one, with a daring medicinal aspect. Aspirin tablets moderately than bandages or ointments, then myrtle and borage. These medicinal notes are extraordinarily spectacular and strange. With water: this sense of freshly mown garden that we have present in fairly just a few Glen Speys earlier than. All from Cadenhead’s, if I bear in mind properly. Mouth (neat): absolutely on some sort of dry limoncello. Fairly spectacular once more. Grapefruit. With water: very tense, dry, lemony and grassy. This chalk once more within the background. End: the driest white Sancerre, simply at a moderately increased energy. Totally on sauvignon-blanc mode! Feedback: I am a fan of this very tart type. Some very younger Rosebanks was once like this, some St. Magdalenes too.

Glen Spey-Glenlivet 17 yo 2001/2019 (54.5%, Cadenhead, Genuine Assortment, bourbon hogsheads, 294 bottles)
Color: white wine. Nostril: moderately comparable, however with a lot much less of that chalky/Aspiriny aspect, which might make it a lot narrower and fewer attention-grabbing. As soon as once more, the wonders of small batches of 2-5 casks over single ones are showcased. With water: lettuce and rucola, plus a contact of metallic polish and eggplants. Mouth (neat): tight, extraordinarily lemony, with ample zests (good title for a dub-techno band, no?) With water: falls a bit. Porridge. End: medium, fairly good, simply very slender. Good earthy aftertaste, although. Feedback: the boundaries of this ‘all concerning the distillate’ idea. On condition that this isn’t Clynelish, proper. Now I nonetheless fairly like this one.

Glen Spey-Glenlivet 16 yo 2001/2018 (55.6%, Cadenhead, Genuine Assortment, bourbon hogsheads, 294 bottles)
In idea, this might be fairly comparable… Color: mild gold. Nostril: no, there’s extra cask impression, some roundness, vanilla, lemon curd, then some sudden sulphur (candles) and rucola once more. Spinach leaves. With water: fried butter. Eh? Mouth (neat): I like this one. Chalky lemons and a few humorous touches of ham and smoky oils, whereas it could then get a bit buttery. Suet, margarin… Maybe a tad weird. With water: good enjoyable, with just a few tiny flaws really being belongings. Buttery sulphur, for instance, ham fats, small inexperienced apples… These very tart notes do really steadiness the fatness. Humorous man. End: moderately lengthy, moderately unlikely. Leaves your palate with a sense of ‘what did we simply attempt’? Feedback: to be sipped whereas listening to Marvin Gaye. Like, Acquired to present it up, prolonged stay model.

Let’s attempt to discover some older classic…

|
Glen Spey-Glenlivet 23 yo 1995/2019 (57.3%, Cadenhead, Single Cask, bourbon hogshead, 222 bottles)
Color: gold. Nostril: yep, immediately. Heat praline, pecan pie, tender liquorice, pink prunes (jujubes), moist limestone sand, bulldog sauce, dried porcinis, hoisin sauce… Love this. With water: superior chalky improvement, with touches of gentian and fresh-crushed mint. Grass. Mouth (neat): simply completely sure. Do I really want to clarify why? Assume manzanilla (I will be again there fairly quickly!) With water: tightens. Bison vodka and extra manzanilla. End: bone dry, walnuts, cider apples, grasses… Feedback: an anecdotal bottle however I am positive anybody can nonetheless discover it, must you want a champion of the grassier type. Definitely not as frequent as houseflies in these moderately oak-inflated days. Very really useful, in truth.

A final one can be so as…
|
|
Glen Spey-Glenlivet 22 yo 1995/2018 (57.9%, Cadenhead, Small Batch, 2 bourbon hogsheads)
Color: mild gold. Nostril: aren’t we changing into Glen-Speyists? Typical top-notch filler, as unsexy as Boris, however wealthy with tiny herbs and grasses, inexperienced peppers, inexperienced lemons and oranges, with a moderately astounding earthiness. Wandering all through a well-catered-for backyard middle (on a Saturday morning within the month of march, proper). With water: no additional developments, quite the opposite. Simply grass. Eh? Mouth (neat): a bit sizzling and tough across the edges, this time. An excessive amount of beer on this one, I’d say. Orange bitters and simply thick ale. With water: will get rounder, clearer as properly, simpler, maltier and cakier. Maybe some speculoos dipped into champagne, a really Belgian factor certainly. End: oh, cherries! Heering, guignolet and such. Feedback: some ups and a few downs nevertheless it’s nonetheless a really charming grassy dram. A l’ancienne, do we are saying in French.
