Little duos, in the present day Glenfiddich

and gooseberries

Fist time we strive the brand new experimental Glenfiddich, known as ‘Orchard’, whereas questioning whether or not they didn’t ‘add pears to pears’ with this mixture – which might be a little bit tautological, no? Let’s examine…

Glenfiddich ‘Orchard Experiment’ (43%, OB, 2022) Three stars

The story goes like they’ve completed a reasonably younger Glenfiddich in ‘Somerset Pomona’, which, as I perceive it, is to Somerset what Pineau des Charentes is to, effectively Charentes. Principally a mix of apple juice with apple brandy (vs grape juice and cognac). Or there, pommeau from Calvados. What’s extra, this can be a quick ending, 4 months. Color: gold. Nostril: certainly, pears to pears, plus some extra-zestiness introduced by notes of inexperienced gooseberries and granny smith, making it considerably gossamer. Within the phrases of Rowan Atkinson, that is “very good”. A lighter honey within the background, maybe acacia. Mouth: sweeter than your common Glenfiddich, reminding us that that English pommeau is a liqueur, so very candy. Actually superb, however we have misplaced part of the lightness that we actually loved when nosing it, whereas this may fairly be geared in the direction of Spanish apple liqueur, Manzana Verde or else. Nonetheless good although, due to the zesty apples. End: medium, candy and zesty certainly, not in contrast to some good German rieslings. Feedback: effectively, they didn’t fairly add pears to pears, fairly apples.

SGP:641 – 82 factors.

One other Glenfiddich please…

Glenfiddich 18 yo 'Small Batch' (40%, OB, +/-2022)

Glenfiddich 18 yo ‘Small Batch’ (40%, OB, +/-2022) Three stars

Ex oloroso and bourbon. Basic model of Glenfiddich, hope it will be rather less skinny than final time we tried it, again in 2016. Color: gold. Nostril: this one’s way more buttery, cakey, with touches of bitter wooden (or walnut bur) and a curious feeling of fern and menthol, fairly sudden. Slightly cedarwood too, English breakfast tea, fig cookies… Actually a high quality nostril, as soon as once more. Mouth: as soon as once more a cakey arrival, however this time fairly with oranges and roasted nuts (and black nougat). The center is fairly drier, if not a little bit drying, with good leafy sherry. The oranges hanging again after some time. End: medium, dry, with some tobacco, bitter chocolate, malt, plus certainly marmalade. Feedback: I appreciated the brand new Experimental ‘fiddich a little bit higher for it was zestier. I am positive this 18 would attain a (comparatively) larger league when bottled at 43% vol. or perhaps a little larger.

SGP:341 – 80 factors.
