Longmorn

2005 to 1969

Longmorn
There will probably be some Glenlivet quickly, however let’s first have a number of Longmorns. The officers do not discover their methods simply, however we do have some quasi-OB by G&M in lieu of the standard apéritif…

Longmorn 2005/2020 (46%, Gordon & MacPhail, Distillery label)

Longmorn 2005/2020 (46%, Gordon & MacPhail, Distillery label) Three stars

G&M cranked up the quantity right here, as the previous 2005, bottled in 2019, was at 43% vol. Good transfer, loud applause. By the best way, we used to name these collection ‘licenced bottlings’ however the brand new denomination is ‘Distillery label’, nevertheless you will not discover a image of the Distillery on these labels. Simply to make issues clear (roughly). Color: gold. Nostril: very malty, very a lot on pot ale, bitter beer, the same old walnuts, then fudge and a skinny slice of pumpernickel, allspice or relatively as-el-hanout. Whiffs of previous wine cellar, with some mustiness. Previous hessian luggage mendacity in a nook. Mouth: a sense of kriek beer at first, muscovado, then cooked beer, cherries, malt, some mentholy toffee and a wee feeling of previous wooden. Some chlorophyl and a few tobacco. End: a bit quick, extra on walnut cake. Artichoke liqueur within the aftertaste. Feedback: I discover this child fairly dry and bitter and imagine earlier, lighter vintages had been a bit simpler. Superb drop although.

SGP:361 – 82 factors.

Longmorn 15 yo 2004 (60.4%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, #7.246, 'Conversations and ruminations', 157 bottles)

Longmorn 15 yo 2004 (60.4%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, #7.246, ‘Conversations and ruminations’, 157 bottles) Four stars

This child was completed in a refill rum cask. Color: white wine. Nostril: you do really feel a fairly varnishy rumness, definitely not disagreeable. That almond-smelling glue that we had been having at college within the Nineteen Seventies, does it nonetheless exist?  Relatively great notes of nougat, custard and white chocolate. With water: extra candy rum popping out, however don’t count on Hampden or Worthy Park. Orange squash, earl gray, cane syrup, sourdough and grist. Mouth (neat): tight, very almondy at first (marzipan), then with a bit acetone and candy varnish as soon as extra. With water: grassier however superb, with a tarry facet within the background. End: medium, effectively between the 2 worlds. Feedback: the phrase ‘conversations’ was spot on. The rum chatting up the malt.

SGP:551 – 86 factors.

Longmorn 16 yo 2003/2020 (59.8%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, Gathering, #7.243, 'Twinning', 396 bottles)

Longmorn 16 yo 2003/2020 (59.8%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, Gathering, #7.243, ‘Twinning’, 396 bottles) Four stars

This time it was completed in first fill PX, so let’s be extra-careful. Color: full gold. Nostril: acetone and polish this time once more, then the most important and moistest panettone ever, previous Bénédictine, and certainly correct previous PX (as in PX, not as in whisky completed in PX-seasoned wooden). More than happy this far. With water: nice enjoyable, with gentian, leaves, tobacco, previous tea, Smyrna raisins, rancio, cherry liqueur, potpourri… I discover this nostril extraordinarily good certainly. Mouth (neat): daring, creamy, extraordinarily on nougat and, as soon as extra, panettone and bergamots. A bit of cinnamon liqueur, maybe baklavas, orange blossom water… With water: maybe not as majestic as on the nostril, however these oranges; marmalades and pickled ginger work effectively and in sync. End: lengthy, a tad grittier and leafier. Bean curd, mochis… Feedback: success, as soon as extra. One of many nicest PX finishes I attempted these days.

SGP:651 – 86 factors.

Maintain on, right here, we do have a quasi-OB…

Longmorn 48 yo 1969 (44.4%, La Distillerie Générale, 2nd fill hogshead, cask #22717, 372 35cl bottles, +/-2018)

Longmorn 48 yo 1969 (44.4%, La Distillerie Générale, 2nd fill hogshead, cask #22717, 372 35cl bottles, +/-2018) Five stars

La Distillerie Générale is definitely an in-house unbiased operation inside Pernod Ricard, the place they harbour some pretty cognacs, rums and, certainly, malt whiskies from their portfolio. They’re relatively arduous to seek out and, I imagine, solely for the French market. I might add that we have already tried fairly a number of stupendous 1969 Longmorns, many from G&M’s racing steady. Color: full gold. Nostril: that time the place propolis, chlorophyl and teas are about to take over, however haven’t but. I imagine you would say that is a great second. Delicate pine resins, fir honeydew, definitely patchouli, lime tea, then citron jam, late-harvest riesling, glazed chestnuts (marrons glacés)… A extremely fabulous nostril, whereas we had relatively tried some previous sherry monsters so far as Longmorn 1969 was involved. Mouth: similar feedback, phrase for phrase. That very explicit second… Marmalade, putty, marzipan, teas, mint, eucalyptus, camphor, juicy sultanas, earthier and extra balsamic honeys, orgeat, fig jam… And previous cognac! End: a tad drier, getting a bit piney, which is regular, even when it loses one or two factors right here. Feedback: maybe a bit extra fragile than the sherry monsters from related vintages and ages, however it’s gloriously delicate. Gainsbourg would have added, ‘and erotic’.

SGP:561 – 91 factors.

Maybe a chaser, for the street. Let’s test the older containers…

Longmorn 21 yo 1992/2014 (52.1%, Acla Selection, Bourbon Hogshead, 144 bottles)

Longmorn 21 yo 1992/2014 (52.1%, Acla Choice, Bourbon Hogshead, 144 bottles) Four stars

An older bottling from our distinguished neighbours Switzerland. Color: gold. Nostril: I bear in mind these orchardy, meursaulty, mineral, flinty batches. Apples, plums, pears, acacia honey, peanut oil, chalk, a tiny handful of Haribo bears, preserved mirabelles… Every little thing’s so as right here. With water: apple and quince jelly. Mouth (neat): excellent agency fruits, greengages, granny smith, inexperienced pears, starfruit, all that unfold with chalk. With water: did I point out apple and quince jelly? End: relatively lengthy and completely on orchard fruits, plus lemon and vegetal oils within the aftertaste. Very contemporary signature. Feedback: simply ‘superb’ and completely au naturel. Hoppla.

SGP:651 – 87 factors.
