Olympic Japanese trios, Day 5/8
We have simply been at Mars’s Tsunuki amenities, so perhaps time to have some Mars from their different amenities…

Mars Maltage 'Cosmo' (43%, OB, blend, Wine Cask Finish, 2020)

Mars Maltage ‘Cosmo’ (43%, OB, mix, Wine Cask End, 2020) Two stars and a half

Some correct malt whisky from Shinshu (within the Japanese Alps they are saying) blended with Scotch and flavoured with pink wine, apparently. They would not inform you which one, might be low-cost Zin… In our e book, that is the unterwhisky class, however we could be just a little too opinionated, are we? No! Color: apricot. Nostril: after all they know find out how to do it, to arrange the casks, keep away from any awful winey notes (which had been to be present in some early finishings circa 2000, bear in mind?) however there nonetheless is a few feintness, some sourness, a sense of synthetic strawberry flavouring (M&S yoghurt), additionally peonies and lotus tea. It is intriguing, it is humorous, it is entertaining, however I would not nostril one other glass. Mouth: it is okay, actually, this heavy caramel is not disagreeable, neither are the notes of blueberry tarte and muffins, however in my e book we’re just a little too removed from ‘malt whisky’. End: medium, on hawthorn and rosehip teas. Caramel and strawberries within the aftertaste. Feedback: as John McEnroe used to say, what is the level? Not a foul drink in any respect, quite the opposite; however it’s not fairly the type of whisky I choose.

SGP:641 – 78 factors.

Since we’re having experimental ones…

Okayama '6 months aged' (60%, OB, Japan, 20cl, +/-2017)

Okayama ‘6 months aged’ (60%, OB, Japan, 20cl, +/-2017) Two stars

This child whisky stems from the Miyashita sake brewery the place, naturally, they’ve the purest water on this planet. Apparently. Color: gold. Nostril: scorching, naturally, however some pretty fermentary aromas got here by, along with dried fermented fruits (litchis?) and one thing metallic. Olives. It does generally remind me of shochu, however I do know little or no about shochu. With water: no modifications. Stones, olives, beers, flints, stems, lees… Mouth (neat): scorching, fermentary, on many dried fruits and a few thick candy ale. We have recognized some slivovitzes that had been a bit like this. Doesn’t fairly really feel like 6 months outdated malt whisky. With water: turns into a tad prickly. Zwetschke liqueur and ginger tonic. End: fairly lengthy, bitter and candy. Feedback: very attention-grabbing however we’re extraordinarily removed from any whisky orthodoxy. Nah, it is fairly difficult, in reality.

SGP:660 – 72 factors.

Okayama '1 year old' (60%, OB, Japan, 20cl, +/-2017)

Okayama ‘1 12 months outdated’ (60%, OB, Japan, 20cl, +/-2017) Three stars

All proper then… Color: amber. Nostril: extra caramel, dried figs, dried bananas and sultanas. Oriental pastry, angel hair, makrouts, orange blossom water, molasses honey… What’s positive is that it gained a lot richness and roundness from these extra-months. With water: thick wealthy beer. Let me brag a wee bit… fifteen years outdated Westvleteren 8! Mouth (neat): significantly better than the 6mo. Extra dried fruits certainly, together with some fermented ones, arrack, fig wine, chutneys, mead… With water: actually fairly good now, we’re reaching rancio territories, Banyuls, younger Pedro Ximenez, Catalunya dulce rancios… End: fairly lengthy and certainly all on candy rancio. Undecided this was what they have been aiming for, however that is fairly a (very gentle) sensation. Feedback: wait, Okayama, is not {that a} Spanish phrase?

SGP:740 – 80 factors.

I agree this wasn’t one of the best Japanese session ever, however keep tuned…
