Olympic Japanese trios, Day 6/8
We’ll merely go on with what we’ve got… This lighter one, for instance…

Kirin 'Housky' (40%, OB, Japan, Pure Malt, 1993)

Kirin ‘Housky’ (40%, OB, Japan, Pure Malt, 1993) Three stars

As I perceive it this was a pure malt mix performed in 1993 to rejoice Kirin’s twenty years in whisky, made out of malt distilled in pot stills and malt distilled in a column nonetheless. Color: mild gold. Nostril: simple and mild, nothing too particular, with some brioche, croissants, vanilla and beer. Mouth: higher, with somewhat earth, lotus seeds, honey and popcorn. Now it will nosedive after twenty seconds, probably due to the sunshine energy. A wee feeling of incense. End: shortish however with a wee saltiness and notes of bananas. Good profile. Feedback: I used to be about to cite Karuizawa however I imagine Kirin solely purchased it from Mercian in 2007. Nicely within the fashion of a budget Karuis that had been the norm earlier than somebody determined to single out the very best casks and bottle them over just a few years.

SGP:541 – 80 factors.

We have one other new cat…

Kanosuke 24 mo 2018/2020 'New Born Peated' (58%, OB, Japan, white oak, 20cl)

Kanosuke 24 mo 2018/2020 ‘New Born Peated’ (58%, OB, Japan, white oak, 20cl) Three stars

Straight from the town of Kagoshima, within the south of Kyushu, though the peated malt is imported from the UK. I am not 100% certain it makes numerous environmental sense to ship European malt to Japan and to reimport it as whisky, however hasn’t the whisky world all the time performed that? Color: gold. Nostril: tough and with actually numerous gritty, tannic oak. Some cherries and a few pears too, plus numerous wooden smoke slightly than straight peat. Water is required, I might guess. With water: wooden shavings, leaves, stems, inexperienced pepper, bitters, a contact of rubber and considered one of cleaning soap. I assume you have to earn this wee one… Mouth (neat): uncooked, on sizzling kirschwasser working from the nonetheless. Inexperienced smoke, pepper, inexperienced peppercorn, bitter cherries… Nicely, certainly that is powerful. With water: somewhat higher, with some sweetness (Cherry Coke) coming out. Ginger tonic. End: lengthy, extraordinarily peppery and bitter. Feedback: I am certain the distillate’s advantageous, nevertheless it seems to be just like the oak’s been fairly indomitable. I am certain the correct route could be ‘much less oak’.

SGP:274 – 70 factors.

One other new cat to stability all this…

Shizuoka 2019/2020 (63.6%, OB Personal for Whiskay, Japan, barrel, cask #2019-529) Five stars

Distilled of their ex-Karuizawa nonetheless. Let’s have a look at if that comes out (I am joking…), now it needs to be very spirit-driven because it matured for less than round 6 months. Cherished what I might do that far. Color: pale white wine. Nostril: glue, marzipan, bitter almonds, olives, mezcal. That is unpeated. Beautiful. With water: extra of all that, phrase for phrase, it received solely a tad simpler and fewer harmful. In principle… Mouth (neat): ingesting varnish blended with limoncello and antifreeze. We must always not drink this like that… With water: there, we tamed it. Nicely, barely… Huge pears coated with glue and antiseptic, maybe acetone, which I am certain sounds fairly repulsive, whereas it isn’t, by no means. Enormous fan of those kinds. This could get splendid at 10/12 years of age. End: lengthy, glue-y and diesely. Plenty of congeners on this one, it appears. Bitter almonds within the aftertaste. Feedback: beloved the primary Shizuoka I might attempt because it got here as an enormous shock. Love this one too, even when the shock is over. Implausible varnishy distillate.

SGP:462 – 90 factors.
