Chalk Hill‘s summer time 2023 sauvignon blanc wines have arrived, and we obtained a pair of them for assessment. Ideas observe.
2019 Chalk Hill Sauvignon Blanc Windy Ridge – Boldly tropical, one may simply mistake this for a high-end New Zealand sauvignon blanc, brisk with pineapple, lemon/lime, and a delicate mineral high quality. Sweeter maybe than it must be because the end builds — which washes away some wanted acidity — the wine lets its tropical qualities linger nicely into the fruit-heavy end. A- / $52
2021 Chalk Hill Property Sauvignon Blanc – That is the usual bottling of Chalk Hill’s sauvignon blanc, and for 2021 it’s a balanced expression that threads the needle between tropical and grassy components, all pushed with a mineral-heavy backdrop. Apple, lemon, and guava notes are all nicely represented, the end treading into extra doughy coconut territory. Not as vibrant because the Windy Ridge expression, however fairly charming and versatile. A- / $22
