Summer time Duets
at this time Benromach once more

Sure, once more, however there’s moderately many new Benromach round and we certain shan’t complain. Neither we could hold these ones within the B-boxes for years…

Benromach

A passer-by signals cask #1 on the inauguration of the Distillery, 1998. (Benromach)

Benromach 2010/2021 (58.4%, OB, for The Whisky Exchange, first-fill bourbon barrel, cask #390, 211 bottles)

Benromach 2010/2021 (58.4%, OB, for The Whisky Change, first-fill bourbon barrel, cask #390, 211 bottles) Four stars and a half
Color: straw. Nostril: a tad hottish however gloriously stuffed with burning hay and lemon icing at first, then mercurochrome and simply iodine. The no-sherry scenario appears to make it extra coastal than traditional and, a contrario, moderately much less farmy. Much less see… With water: the first-fill facet of the barrel comes out, with some custard and truffles and a rounder profile on the nostril, however the combo would additionally generate notes of eucalyptus and patchouli, even perhaps just a little ‘good grass’. Mouth (neat): I might say by no means a Benromach has been this near a peated Islay whisky. Clear and loud peat smoke, medicinal notes, lemons, chalk, even kippers and shellfish, all that on a moderately fats, oily physique. Dried apple chips. With water: tremendous good, tight and fats on the similar time, with these notes of sharp inexperienced white wine (sauvignon blanc) that we get pleasure from a lot. Much less Islay too but it surely clearly stays ‘a peater’. Some herbs, sage? Tarragon? However solely wee bits… End: moderately lengthy, nonetheless fats, tight and shiny. Extra saltiness, extra seashells, extra minerality. Feedback: completely beautiful and clearly on the Highland Park – Clynelish – Benromach (some) – Ben Nevis – Springbank line.

SGP:455 – 89 factors.

Benromach 40 yo (57.1%, OB, first-fill oloroso sherry, 1047 bottles, 2021)

Benromach 40 yo (57.1%, OB, first-fill oloroso sherry, 1047 bottles, 2021) Five stars
I could not spot any classic statements on this model new one, so it may very well be a multi-vintage expression, similar to the excellent 2019 version that we tried earlier in August (WF 91). Now the 2019 was bourbon + sherry, while this new 2021 is full sherry. It is nonetheless ‘Diageo’ distillation as G&M purchased the then silent Benromach Distillery in 1993 and restarted manufacturing in 1998. By the way in which Diageo stored bottling some Benromach after the sale, for instance with a 1978/1998 Uncommon Malts which, by the way in which, I did not like an excessive amount of, however let’s transfer on… Color: bronze gold, in order that they weren’t ‘darkish’ sherry casks. Nostril: begins with just a little plasticine and whiffs of brand name new electronics however will get then completely shock-full of dried fruits, together with tropical ones. For instance, our good mates the bananas. After which, it might transfer in direction of bouillons and Asian sauces, soy, teriyaki, sesame… Somewhat dazzling thus far. With water: the plasticine remains to be there whereas all the remainder is moderately elegant and would remind me of some a lot older ‘full sherry’ bottles by one other, maybe a tad extra well-known Speyside distillery. A bit wooden and rubber smokes (a lot distant whiffs of burning tyres). Mouth (neat): these barely bitter touches at first (cherries, balsamic vinegar) that we have already encountered in older vintages, going in direction of leather-based, pepper and cigars, then lighter gravy after which marmalade and kumquats, with touches of espresso. Strikes quite a bit, in all senses of that phrase (besides senses that I would not know of as a non-native, naturally). With water: moderately totally different, that’s to say extra on fragrant and ‘fruity herbs’, which is simply unbelievable. Peach leaf syrup, yellow chartreuse (that is simpler than quoting many herbs – a taster’s trick), fir honey, earl gray, oriental pastries, mint and almonds… What’s extra the oak stays extraordinarily civilised all alongside as a result of whereas being there, it might by no means increase its voice. End: lengthy, with extra chocolate, espresso and marmalade, with a salty contact and one other drop of bouillon, the quaint manner. The plasticine is again within the aftertaste, which I discover humorous. There’s fairly some cracked pepper too. Feedback: an extended tasting observe says all of it.
