Summer time Duets
Some Mortlach
The beast of Dufftown that now is available in fairly sq. bottles, is that description adequate for you? Now to be sincere, such duets are at all times very laborious to do since when the whisky’s good, you’ll simply want extra. A problem to the taster!

Mortlach 14 yo 'Alexander's Way' (43.4%, OB, +/-2020)

Mortlach 14 yo ‘Alexander’s Method’ (43.4%, OB, +/-2020) Three stars and a half
Which Alexander would that be? Alexander The Nice? Alexander McQueen? Pushkin? Calder? Fleming? Color: gold. Nostril: aromatic and fairly vivid, beginning straight on marmalade and zests, with some clear wooden smoke and a few espresso dregs and a few chilly black tea. Add some earthy black prunes and just a little coal tar, scoria and simply plain coal. It is harking back to some older official Mortlach, comparable to some batches of the Flora & Fauna. Mouth: fairly rustic and tough, with clearly extra wooden smoke and coal, fairly a whole lot of pepper, bitter plum wine, a drop of Maggi (which is fairly salty), then coffeeish malt and a rising earthiness. No clean malt whisky in any respect, it is even going in the direction of heavy stout, comparable to Mackeson’s (I am not too positive, I final tried that 30 years in the past), with some sort of semi-sweet astringency. End: dry, earthy, nonetheless rustic, maybe a tad meaty now, which must be fairly ‘Mortlach’. Say sweeter gentle beef jerky. Candy workplace espresso within the aftertaste. Feedback: it is actually rustic certainly. I like this, but it surely’s most likely not for everybody. If I could, Alexander.
SGP:452 – 83 factors.

Mortlach 15 yo 'Game of Thrones' (46%, OB, +/-2019)

Mortlach 15 yo ‘Recreation of Thrones’ (46%, OB, +/-2019) Three stars and a half
A Mortlach ‘Recreation of Thrones’, that is like a Meursault ‘Mariah Carey’ or a Cohiba ‘Céline Dion’. No? Bear in mind Recreation of Thrones? It was a mediocre fantasy/violent/intercourse TV sequence that used to drag some success pre-Covid and that used to have strictly nothing to do with whisky, not to mention Scotch malt whisky. Maybe one thing vaguely Scottish? Keep in mind that? Color: straw. Nostril: burnt herbs and woods, bitter ashes and fruits, pine resin, burnt sugar and certainly Guinness. Some soot too, saltpetre, bay leaves. Not an enormous fan of this nostril… Mouth: a lot better than what the nostril recommended. Good bitter herbs and bitter oranges, bitter beer, pepper, ‘sucking your cigar’, then some strawberry syrup and just a little grenadine. Strawberry cream. That is weird… Haribo’s Large Strawbs. Truly, I fairly take pleasure in this uncommon palate, understanding that strawberries are completely not unusual in malt whisky; it is simply that I’ve forgotten the title of the molecule(s). End: fairly lengthy, fairly good. Chocolate lined strawberries and cracked black pepper. Feedback: the TV sequence was a nasty nightmare IMHO, whereas this Mortlach was fairly higher. That anybody thought that it could be a good suggestion to affiliate such a high quality malt whisky with Recreation of Thrones nonetheless baffles me. Subsequent, a Clynelish ‘Sharknado’? Brora ‘Chainsaw Bloodbath’? Lagavulin ‘Concern the Strolling Useless’?

We simply could not cease this right here; we want a trio or a quartet. So let’s go on with one other well-known 15…

Mortlach 15 yo (43%, Gordon & MacPhail, distillery label, +/-2020)

Mortlach 15 yo (43%, Gordon & MacPhail, distillery label, +/-2020) Four stars
What a beautiful previous label, even when the bottle itself has modified. An previous good friend, actually… Color: gold. Nostril: extra brightness, extra fruits, extra citrus, whereas it could have saved this type of mineral meatiness that is so very ‘Mortlach’. What was anticipated and anticipated is occurring after round two minutes, that’s to say a fairly huge soupy, miso-y growth, with parsley, marrow, umami, Maggi, Bovril and onion soup. How very Mortlach. Mouth: beats the OBs in my e book, whereas the profile can be very related, on pepper, earth, bitter herbs, contact of salt, tobacco and Fernet Branca. I’ve at all times been pondering that Fernet Branca was very Mortlach, and conversely. Tends to develop into drier and drier, virtually bitter. Naively biting right into a Seville orange – I communicate from private expertise. End: fairly lengthy, fairly large given the ABV, fairly bitter, salty, meaty and natural. Feedback: I actually like this Mortlach 15. A better voltage was not wanted. Cellar this and we’ll speak round 2045.
SGP:462 – 86 factors.

Nonetheless, extra oomph and we’re carried out.

Mortlach 12 yo 2008/2020 (57.1%, Signatory Vintage for The Whisky Exchange, first fill bourbon, cask #800109, 177 bottles)

Mortlach 12 yo 2008/2020 (57.1%, Signatory Classic for The Whisky Alternate, first fill bourbon, cask #800109, 177 bottles) Four stars
No sherry this time, whereas we have already seen that Mortlach with none sherry in any respect may very well be fairly totally different. Color: white wine. Nostril: oh huge chalk and wort, pine needles, then fairly litchis and pears, which is just a little stunning certainly. These strawberries are again too, hay, tiger balm, gorse, mullein flowers, woodruff… how very fascinating (and good). With water: manzanilla and fruity sake, 50/50. I’m not joking. Mouth (neat): actually fats, fairly on paraffin and bitter oils (sturdy olive), sooty, getting tarter, on inexperienced lemons and inexperienced apples. The tartiest granny smith. Bang. With water: actually good, mineral and sooty, and fruity on the identical time, a sort of combo that is fairly uncommon elsewhere. So, I might say it is extremely Mortlach. End: lengthy, extra of grapefruits, with one thing that is not quite common in whisky…. drumroll… tomatoes! The aftertaste is a bit more widespread, extra on malt, chalk, bread, apples… Tiny contact of salt as soon as once more. Feedback: completely wonderful, high fats meaty distillate in a brighter guise.
SGP:452 – 87 factors.
