Three Glen Moray
I’ve an enormous tender spot for Glen Moray, they not often disappoint I discover. And even as we speak, there are fairly a couple of casks round which stand above many different Speysiders I believe. Let’s attempt three of them as we speak.

Glen Moray 2008/2021 (54.9%, Francis Cuthbert private cask, cask #5576, bourbon barrel, 233 bottles)

Glen Moray 2008/2021 (54.9%, Francis Cuthbert personal cask, cask #5576, bourbon barrel, 233 bottles)
Color: straw. Nostril: fairly candy, however naturally so, a really elegant trendy 1st fill barrel at first nosing. A lot of posh custard made with dessert wines, coconut water, gorse flower, barley sugars and lemon curd. The epitome of superb trendy whisky, a profile which it’s laborious to be in opposition to when offered humbly like this. With water: just a little firmer, a notch drier and some extra refined issues like lemon peels, dried herbs and miso. Nonetheless general fairly candy and recent although. Mouth: good arrival, somewhat fats and juicy. A lot of vanilla cream, custard pastries, mild grassiness, sunflower oil, buttered oatcakes and a few hints of sandalwood and mineral oils. With water: as on the nostril it is extra chalky, grassy, citric and natural with touches of tiger balm and wintergreen. Excellent. End: medium in size, candy however balanced, lemon marmalade, barley sugar once more, malt extract and candy breakfast cereals. Feedback: Have you ever observed how trendy Glen Moray really tends to be superb?

Color: straw. Nostril: one in every of these extraordinarily pure and charming Speyside noses that is simply riddled with straw, freshly kilned malt, crushed oatcakes, breakfast cereals and issues like runny honey and golden syrup. You can even add to that some granny smith apples and cider apples smooshed along with a couple of drops of pumpkinseed oil. A nostril you would describe as easy but in addition complicated (what?) I discover it effortlessly charming, a mode it is unattainable to be in opposition to. With water: goes additional down this route of crispness and sharpness with issues like nettle, spearmint and just a little mentholated tobacco. Mouth: dusty malt bins (which I eat often) watercress, fennel, dried mint and barley sugars with lemon peel. A sense of crunchiness as nicely which is sort of humorous and a few properly tart inexperienced acidity, white pepper and gooseberry notes. Enjoyable stuff! With water: turns into fatter and oilier in texture which could be very interesting. Olive oil, bouquet garni of dried herbs, flower pollens and fairly a couple of notes of beers reminiscent of IPAs and old style shilling ales. End: medium in size and turning into somewhat savoury, on soda breads, fruit scone combine and touches of turmeric and tarragon. Feedback: playful, unassuming and easy – which appears to more and more be my watchword for these extraordinarily charming Glen Morays. Similar high quality because the Cuthbert Cask.

Glen Moray 10 yo 1986/1997 (59.1%, Scotch Malt Whisky Society, #35.15)

An random oldie from the center years of the SMWS – there have been elegant whiskies throughout this period, and likewise complete clunkers. Let’s examine which finish of the spectrum this wee Glen Moray strays in direction of… Color: pale straw. Nostril: fairly a distinct type, that is bolder, fatter, drier and extra petrolic. A richer type of distillate general however nonetheless somewhat elegant I believe. Barley sugars, lemon barley water, chalk, putty and pressed flowers. With water: actually now on white flowers, chalk, pollens, sunflower oil, bread dough and oatcakes. Austere, however frivolously so. Mouth: there’s outdated type, then there’s trendy type, after which there’s one thing like this, which we should always maybe begin calling ‘center type’. A somewhat pretty mixture of petrols, cooking oils, mineral oils, putty, linseed oil, lemon peel, citronella and toasted seeds, brown bread and numerous varieties of scone dough. Some wee hints of white stone fruit as nicely. Fairly completely different from the opposite two however this is top quality distillate. With water: nutty muesli, extra thick cooking oils, watercress, lanolin and suet. The feel is actually fairly thick now, emphasising all these oils and putty vibes. End: good size, somewhat dry, chiselled, sharp and peppery with chunky cereals and toasted breads. Feedback: the enjoyable facet of mental whiskies. A particular departure in distillate type from the opposite two, however that is nonetheless prime quality, very enjoyable, characterful whisky. I doubt there’s too many different Speysiders from this manufacturing period that will get up nicely at this age in comparatively restrained wooden. 87 once more, so: strike!
