Little duos, two extremities

of French whisky

Previous French whiskies! There are tons of recent malt whisky distilleries in France nowadays (nicely, distilleries which can be making whisky, which isn’t precisely the identical idea), however French whiskies which can be +/- 15 to twenty years previous are extraordinarily uncommon and certainly stuff of pioneers. Let’s have two of them…

Eddu 21 yo 2001/2022 'Graal' (43%, OB, France, 304 bottles)

Eddu 21 yo 2001/2022 ‘Graal’ (43%, OB, France, 304 bottles) Four stars and a half

That is buckwheat whisky, which Eddu, a.okay.a. Distillerie des Menhirs within the far west of Brittany have pioneered within the very early 2000s already (they’d launched their first buckwheat whisky again in 2002). Buckwheat a.okay.a. black wheat or sarasin is a really conventional ‘quasi’ or ‘pseudo’ cereal in Brittany, with one of the best crêpes made out of it (yum!) Frankly, some are making whisky out of rice, so why not buckwheat. Yeah, I do know rice IS a cereal. What’s extra, we have already tried some wonderful Eddu up to now. Color: deep gold. Nostril: we’re wandering between previous malt and previous cognac territories, with this peachy sweetness, honeys, raisins, ripe melons, ripe damsons, then vanilla and brioche, a floral aspect (dandelions), maybe slightly mead, beeswax, previous firwood, mirabelles, macaroons… I discover it beautiful and intensely civilised, as there are strictly no apparent woody tones. Mouth: as soon as once more you might consider that is previous cognac, and we will not complain. Raisins, extra honey and beeswax, orange zests, tarte tatin, preserved peaches, dried figs… and nonetheless no apparent tannins. Extraordinarily seductive. End: medium, nonetheless very contemporary and fruity, with touches of agricole rum this time (actually) and raisins/honey within the aftertaste. Feedback: an superior spirit. Oh and I am discovering it humorous that whereas simply everybody in Charentes can be making whisky nowadays, some Breton whiskymakers would have managed to make a beautiful ‘cognacqy whisky’ utilizing some pseudocereal. Nice enjoyable, very very good drop, very nicely finished.

A brief drive from the west of Brittany to the north of Alsace (that is solely round 1,000 kilometres in spite of everything…)

Uberach 2004/2022 (46.5%, LMDW, Version Française, Banyuls cask)

Uberach 2004/2022 (46.5%, LMDW, Model Française, Banyuls cask) Four stars

So this insane Alsatian malt whisky has first spent loads of time in an ex-Banyuls cask (heavy candy wine), was then reracked into small virgin casks, after which let to relaxation in demijohns since 2017. So technically, I consider it’s a 12 or 13 years previous. Oh and the color alone is slightly scary. Color: darkish mahogany. Actually. Nostril: tar and black Corinthian currants, stewed rhubarb, morello cherries, previous Burgundy (say Clos Parantoux by Henri Jayer – joking however thank god you do not have to pay when quoting a wine), loads of walnut stain, different natural decoctions (peach leaves), after which a rising candy fruitiness that basically lifts it, round blackberries and cassis jelly. Some gamy notes within the background, grouse, wild boar, pheasant, umami, previous soy sauce… Mouth: what a concoction. Extra walnut stain, pipe juice, a triple ristretto, black chocolate (like 85% cocoa), meats, extra wild boar pâté, roasted chestnuts, black raisins, bouillons and broths, chilly cuts, bresaola and Grisons meat, beef jerky, even perhaps Turkish ‘pemican’ (forgot the Turkish identify)… Of and loads of tobacco. End: lengthy and slightly leathery – this was to occur. Black ‘Gauloise’ tobacco within the aftertaste. Feedback: whether or not that is completely authorized or not, I would not be too certain. After all it’s, nice enjoyable, nicely finished Grasp Jean!
