Two wee malts from and for Ukraine

To our Ukrainian pals.

Westport 1996/2019 (49.1%, Berry Bros. for Scyfion Choice, Ukraine, Argaman Jezreel Cask Finish, 102 bottles)

Westport 1996/2019 (49.1%, Berry Bros. for Scyfion Alternative, Ukraine, Argaman Jezreel Cask End, 102 bottles) Five stars

Westport is the title of Glenmorangie as a ‘blended malt’, whereas Argaman is a purple grape varietal and Jezreel a well known valley in Israel. Color: peony gold. Nostril: typical red-vinous malt whisky, with small rubbery touches and a mixture with ganache, praline and stewed fruits, apricots, peaches, then Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte and a little bit maraschino. Whiffs of fern. Mouth: some tiny rubbery and peppery touches at first, then many leaves, teas, some bitter pine resin, some vegetal tar… End: somewhat lengthy, with good malt – wine integration. Feedback: excellent, very shifting. Makes you need to cry.

Mortlach 13 yo 2005/2018 (48.4%, Douglas Laing for Scyfion Choice, Old Particular, Ukraine, Cherna Troyanda Cask Finish, 328 bottles)

Mortlach 13 yo 2005/2018 (48.4%, Douglas Laing for Scyfion Alternative, Outdated Explicit, Ukraine, Cherna Troyanda Cask End, 328 bottles) Five stars

Cherna Troyanda is, as I perceive it, some candy desert wine made in Transcarpathia, Ukraine, out of pink Traminer (or savagnin rose I’d suppose). Oh how I would like to go go to that place. Color: full gold. Nostril: jogs my memory of a number of glorious ex-Sauternes malt whiskies, with touches of rose petals at first (I could also be dreaming) after which nectarine and peach jams, quince jelly and varied high-end honeys. Very pretty nostril. Mouth: the full-bodied distillate and the thicker, sweeter wine do tango nicely, with notes of toasted fruitcake (my favorite, with numerous candied cherries), then a little bit inexperienced pepper from the oak, I’d suppose. End: some citrus coming by means of. Pink grapefruits, maybe. Feedback: the distillers ought to ship the Wee Witchie to Ukraine, just a few magic tips could also be wanted. I really feel the necessity to add that it is onerous to attempt to joke in such circumstances.
